Job summary

Opportunity Resource Services is seeking a College Access Advisor to support rural high school students with college readiness, admissions, and financing. The role offers 8–10 hours per week with occasional weekend field trips, and a flexible, mission-driven environment.

You will mentor and teach students at Venus High School, use Socratic dialogue, and help families navigate FAFSA, Apply Texas, and scholarships.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree is required.
  • Experience delivering college readiness, tutoring or teaching preferred.
  • High GPA and strong academic record preferred.
  • Knowledge of FAFSA, Apply Texas and scholarships helpful.
  • First‑generation or low-income student background is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Socratic tutoring method preferred.
  • TRIO program experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Address college readiness issues, including navigation of the college system and financial aid.
  • Provide Socratic-method tutoring to support academic growth.
  • Follow up on test scores, tutorials, and character development.
  • Offer online advisement and tutorials as needed.
  • Assist with program operations, outreach, and organizing supplies.
  • Attend meetings and trainings, and complete paperwork on time.
  • Support ad hoc projects as needed.

Join ORS as a College Access Advisor and help high school students in a rural community prepare for college, careers, and life beyond graduation.

This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy mentoring, teaching, and encouraging students—while working a flexible schedule in a supportive, mission-driven environment.

Expected Hours: 8-10 hours/week. There would also be the occasional opportunity to attend Saturday field trips as needed and available.

Site Location: Venus High School, Venus, TX

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred qualifications for ORS College Access Advisors include:

  • An associate’s degree;
  • Previous experience providing college readiness services, tutoring or teaching;
  • Demonstrated academic excellence (high GPA);
  • Knowledge of FAFSA, Apply Texas, and Scholarship applications;
  • Has a personal background as a first-generation college student or low-income student;
  • Demonstrated knowledge in use of the Socratic method for tutoring;
  • Previous TRIO experience.
Minimum Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for ORS College Access Advisors include:

  • Successful college experience beyond high school;
  • Reliable transportation to school sites;
  • Ability to coach behavior of youth;
  • Able to set strong professional boundaries with youth;
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills;
  • Patience and a strong desire to help students achieve their educational goals.
Duties and Responsibilities

Generally, advisors for ORS programs are responsible for providing college readiness service and character development for project participants at the target schools and conducting tutorials.

The duties and responsibilities of ORS College Access Advisors include:

  • Addressing issues related to college readiness, including topics such as navigation of the college system, the application process, financial aid, study habits, common college pitfalls, SAT/ACT preparation, etc.
  • Using the Socratic method, provide support, advice, and tutorial help for students ensuring their academic development, success in their classes, and readiness for state exams.
  • Following-up with students on test scores, previous tutorials, character development, and preparing for the future.
  • Available for online advisement and tutorials.
  • Monitor and respond to student behavior during the after school program, field trips, and workshops.
  • Being aware of program activities & field trips (purposes, dates, etc.)
  • Establishing positive mentoring relationships with students and addressing character issues that affect their ability or will affect their ability to succeed in high school, college, and beyond.
  • When not providing tutorials, assist with program operation by contacting missing students, writing encouraging notes to students, and assisting in the cleaning of computers & organizing supplies.
  • Attending meetings & trainings and submitting required paperwork on time.
  • Assisting with ad hoc projects as needed.
Physical Demands

Must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs., to stand and walk for long periods of time, to endure strong heat and cold, to climb stairs and to fly on airplane. Must be able to project voice and speak publicly. Must be able to drive a vehicle, read road signs, judge distance, spend extensive hours in front of a computer screen. Must be able to listen carefully to others on the telephone.
