Job Description
Job Summary: The LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center seeks a Collection Services Librarian . Reporting to the Head of Resource Management, the Collection Services Librarian is responsible for developing, assessing, acquiring, and providing access to the Law Library's print and electronic collections in support of the teaching, research, and service missions of the Law Center. The position coordinates collection development activities, acquisitions workflows, serials management, cataloging, and metadata services to ensure that library resources are discoverable and accessible to users.
They must be able to function in a collegial, teamwork-oriented environment with a strong service orientation; be self-motivated, with excellent attention to detail and superior organizational and analytical skills; maintain strong communication and interpersonal skills, and have the ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally, and in a timely manner; capacity to work independently and as a collaborative team member.
Candidates holding a J.D. in addition to the required M.L.S. may participate in legal research instruction and other faculty responsibilities as assigned.
Job Responsibilities:
- Lead collection development activities for the Law Library, including evaluating and assessing existing collections, identifying collection strengths and gaps, recommending purchases and cancellations, and working collaboratively with reference librarians and faculty to select resources that support curricular and research needs. Participate in collection assessment, inventory, preservation, and deselection projects as appropriate. (25%)
- Manage acquisitions workflows for print and electronic resources, including ordering library materials through GOBI and other vendors, receiving materials, maintaining standing orders and subscriptions, monitoring expenditures, and communicating with publishers, vendors, and consortia regarding acquisitions and collection needs. (25%)
- Perform copy cataloging for both firm and continuing materials in all formats, following MARC metadata standards, RDA, LC Subject Headings, and LC Classification practices; ensure metadata quality and consistency to support discovery and access. Familiarity with OCLC Connexion and integrated library systems is desired. (25%)
- Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current with emerging trends, standards, and best practices in collection development, acquisitions, cataloging, metadata, and legal information services. Actively participate in local, state, and national library and law library organizations and associations. (10%)
- Collaborate with library faculty and staff to develop policies, workflows, and procedures related to collection development, acquisitions, metadata management, and resource access. Participate in library planning, special projects, and initiatives that support the strategic goals of the Law Library. (10%)
- Perform additional duties as assigned in support of the library's mission and evolving needs. ( 5%)
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS, MLS, or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution.
- 3 years of professional experience in an academic, law, or research library involving acquisitions, collection development, cataloging, metadata, or technical services.
- Knowledge of current cataloging standards, including MARC 21, RDA, and authority control practices.
- Experience working with integrated library systems and bibliographic utilities such as OCLC.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and workflows effectively.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a collegial environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5 years experience in a law library or other academic library.
- Knowledge of legal publishing and legal information resources.
- Experience with collection assessment and collection development planning.
- Experience with Exlibris' Alma: Acquisitions, Resources, Analytics, Metadata Editor; familiarity with vendor platforms such a GOBI.
- Experience managing serials and continuing resources.
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Teaching, training, or instructional experience.
