Experience and Education

  • Required three to five (3-5) years of acute hospital-based coding experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience working in a remote environment preferred; required for PRN Coders.
  • Preferred bachelor's degree or Associate Degree in Health Information Management and/or closely related field. Credentials such as Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) are preferred.

Job Duties

  • Responsible for coding inpatient accounts using ICD-10 CM/PCS, in compliance with guidelines. Accurately identifies diagnoses and procedures for DRG, including secondary diagnoses, CC/MCCs, POA status, and severity of illness.
  • Abstracts required data elements such as discharge disposition, destination, procedure dates, and physicians.
  • Recognizes when physician queries are needed and routes documentation issues appropriately.
  • Maintains quality and productivity standards set by UTSW/HIM Coding.
  • Mentors/train on designated coding service lines as requested to ensure quality.
  • Maintains expert knowledge of coding guidelines and practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

This job is remote only and individuals will work permanently from an approved alternate worksite. Qualifications considered as equivalents require prior approval. This position is security-sensitive and subject to criminal background checks.
