Experience and Education

  • Required three to five (3-5) years of acute hospital-based coding experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience working in a remote environment is preferred; required for PRN Coders.
  • Preferred qualifications include a bachelor's degree or an Associate Degree in Health Information Management or a closely related field, along with credentials such as RHIA, RHIT, or CCS.

Job Duties

  • Code concurrent or retrospective inpatient accounts using ICD-10 CM/PCS, in compliance with Official Coding Guidelines. Accurately identify the appropriate Admit Diagnosis, Principal Diagnosis, and Procedure for the DRG, including all secondary diagnoses, CC/MCCs, POA status, Severity of Illness, and Risk of Mortality.
  • Abstract required data elements such as discharge disposition, destination, procedure dates, physician(s), and other designated data. Recognize when physician queries are necessary for clarification and when documentation is missing or incomplete, routing appropriately. Complete review and final coding once queries and documentation are available.
  • Maintain the Quality and Productivity Standards set by UTSW/HIM Coding.
  • Mentor and train staff on designated coding service lines to ensure quality.
  • Maintain an expert level of knowledge of coding guidelines and practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

This position is remote only, and individuals residing in the designated work location will work 100% from an approved alternate worksite. Qualifications for equivalency require prior approval from the Vice President for Human Resources Administration. This is a security-sensitive position subject to Texas Education Code 51.215, which permits UT Southwestern to obtain criminal history records.
