Job summary

MedStar Ambulatory Services, part of MedStar Health, is seeking a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) with 1-2 years of coding experience to join our ASC coding team in Columbia, MD. The role offers a hybrid schedule after a 90-day probation period, with remote work on Mondays and Fridays and on-site coordination Tue–Thu.

Responsibilities include coding and abstracting ASC services using CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS, maintaining accuracy and data quality.

Qualifications

• 1-2 years coding experience and familiarity with clinical information systems (e.g., 3M grouper electronic medical records, computer assisted coding).
• CPC (Certified Professional Coder) required; CPC-A (Apprentice) is not sufficient.
• Experience with CPT-4 and ICD-10-CM coding practices is expected.

Responsibilities

• Abstracts and ensures accuracy of diagnoses, procedures, patient demographics, and other required data elements.
• Contacts physician when conflicting or ambiguous information appears in the medical record and adheres to policy.
• Meets established quality and productivity standards as defined by policies.
• Resolves all quality reviews timely (e.g., Medical necessity reviews; Coding Quality assurance reviews; external vendor reviews).
• Reviews medical record documentation to assign correct diagnostic and procedural codes and modifiers using standard guidelines.

This is a full-time, Monday-Friday position. Following successful completion of the 90-day probationary period, the position offers a hybrid work schedule: Monday & Friday: Remote & Tuesday-Thursday: On-site

General Summary of Position

Codes and abstracts Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) services using CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS and other applicable patient classification schemes.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Abstracts and ensures accuracy of diagnoses, procedure, patient demographics and other required data elements.
• Contacts physician when conflicting or ambiguous information appears in the medical record. Adheres to the MedStar Coding Query Policy and procedure.
• Meets established Quality standards as defined by policies.
• Meets established Productivity standards as defined by policies.
• Resolves all quality reviews timely (e.g. Medical necessity reviews; Coding Quality assurance reviews; external vendor reviews).
• Reviews medical record documentation to identify diagnoses and procedures. Assigns correct diagnostic, procedural codes and appropriate modifiers using standard guidelines and maintaining departmental accuracy standards.

Minimal Qualifications

Education

• High School Diploma or GED required
• Associate's degree orBachelor's degree in coding related studies preferred
• Courses in Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology ICD-CM required
• CPT-4 preferred

Experience

• 1-2 years coding experience and experience with clinical information systems (3M grouper electronic medical records computer assisted coding) preferred

Licenses and Certifications

• CPC (Certified Professional Coder) required

This position has a hiring range of
