Job summary

Southcentral Foundation (SCF) is seeking Coding Specialists to review and assign dental, medical, and behavioral codes for diagnoses, procedures, and services performed by physicians and other providers in the Anchorage area.

The role emphasizes proficiency in CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10, with two level paths offering increasing responsibility. Alaska Native/American Indian preference applies in hiring.

Qualifications

  • Postsecondary certificate in medical billing and coding
  • Associate’s Degree in Accounting, Health Care Financial Management or related field
  • Equivalent combination of training, education and related experience
  • Certification in one of: Dental Coding and Billing (AAPC), CPC (AAPC), CCS (or Certified Coding Specialist)
  • One (1) year of dental, medical, or behavioral coding and/or billing experience
  • Two (2) years of clerical experience in a healthcare organization or in a role requiring basic accounting principles

Responsibilities

  • Review and assign accurate dental, medical and behavioral codes for diagnoses, procedures and services performed by physicians and other qualified healthcare providers in the office setting.
  • Proficient in coding across a wide range of services, including evaluation and management, surgery, radiology, pathology, behavioral health.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10, as well as anatomy, physiology and medical terminology needed to correctly code provider diagnoses and services.
  • Two levels (I and II) with progression based on demonstrated ability to handle more responsible assignments.

Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Southcentral Foundation (SCF) Coding Specialist is responsible for reviewing and assigning accurate dental, medical and behavioral codes for diagnoses, procedures, and services performed by physicians and other qualified healthcare providers in the office setting. The Coding Specialist are proficient in coding across a wide range of services, including evaluation and management, surgery, radiology, pathology, behavioral, of medical and dental procedures. The Coding Specialist demonstrates sound knowledge of dental and/or medical coding guidelines and regulations including compliance and reimbursement. The Coding Specialist has knowledge of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCs), and International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) as well as knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology necessary to correctly code provider diagnosis and services.

This position has two (2) levels designed to provide progressively more responsible and independent work experiences. Progression between job levels is based on the demonstrated ability to successfully handle more progressively responsible assignments.

Qualifications

SCF programs are established to serve a primary population comprised of Alaska Native people who are affiliated with Cook Inlet Region, Inc. (CIRI) and Alaska Native and American Indian people within SCF’s geographical service area. Employees should have a thorough understanding of the cultures and the needs of this population. Such knowledge is critical to ensure the achievement of SCF’s vision of a Native Community that enjoys physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness, and mission of working together with the Native Community to achieve wellness through health and related services.

  • Postsecondary certificate in medical billing and coding; OR Associate’s Degree in Accounting, Health Care Financial Management or related field; OR equivalent combination of training, education and related experience.
  • Certification in one of the following:
    • Dental Coding and Billing, through AAPC
    • CPC (Certified Professional Coding) through AAPC
    • CCS or (Certified Coding Specialist)
  • One (1) year of dental, medical, or behavioral coding and/or billing experience.
  • Two (2) years of clerical experience working in a healthcare organization or in a position that requires understanding and application of basic accounting principles or equivalent.
Additional Qualifications for Coding Specialist II
  • Two (2) additional years of dental and/or medical or behavioral coding experience; OR certification in one of the following:
    • RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) through AHIMA.
