Job summary

UCHealth is seeking a Coding Specialist to assign codes to medical diagnoses and procedures using appropriate coding classifications for assigned areas/record types. You will review medical records, determine diagnostic and procedural code assignments, and assign charges for clinics/departments as appropriate.

You will communicate with the department manager on coding, compliance and documentation issues, and seek clarification from healthcare providers to ensure accurate coding.

Qualifications

• High School diploma GED is required.
• One of RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CCA, CPC, CPC-H certification within 1 year from hire.
• Certification from AHIMA or AAPC is preferred.
• BLS/CPR certification through AHA or Red Cross required and valid through 60 days after hire.

• Assigns charges for applicable clinics/departments as appropriate.
• Communicates with department manager/supervisor on coding, compliance and documentation issues.
• Seeks clarification from healthcare providers or other designated resources to ensure accurate and complete coding. Enhances coding knowledge and skills with continuing education activities and by reviewing pertinent literature.
• Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.

• Coding-related certification from AHIMA or AAPC as determined at position level.
• BLS - BLS through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross with card in-hand before start date. BLS or CPR card must be good through sixty days of hire. All renewals must be issued by the American Heart Association.
