Job summary

Sharp HealthCare in California is seeking a Coder II to code diagnoses and visit procedures for the Emergency Department, Infusions, Wound Care Clinic and Outpatient Encounters under supervision of the Director or Manager.

The role requires ICD-10-CM and CPT coding experience, RHIT/CCS/CCA/CPC credentials, and strong analytical and IT skills; you will ensure accuracy, compliance, and ongoing education to maintain professional certification.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months Emergency Department coding experience using ICD-10-CM and CPT; will consider one year outpatient or inpatient coding experience in lieu of 6 months ED coding.
• Internal transfers: will consider one year Coder 1 experience in lieu of 6 months ED coding.
• Wound Care Clinic encounters and Infusion Center coding experience using CPT and/or ICD-10-CM codes, preferred.

Responsibilities

• Code diagnoses and visit applicable procedures for the Emergency Department, Infusions, Wound Care Clinic and Outpatient Encounters.
• Maintain coding guidelines per HCPCS/CPT and ICD-10-CM; ensure accuracy and compliance.
• Adhere to AHIMA Standards and engage in ongoing education to maintain certifications.
• Support management with accurate documentation and coding practices.

Hourly Pay Range (Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum):

$31.230 - $38.250 - $45.280

This position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with SEIU.

What You Will Do

Under the supervision of the Director or Manager, the Coder II is responsible for coding (using HCPCS/CPT and/or ICD-10-CM) all diagnoses and visit applicable procedures for the Emergency Department, Infusions Wound Care Clinic and Outpatient Ancillary encounters.

Required Qualifications

• Six (6) months Emergency Department coding experience utilizing ICD-10-CM codes and CPT required; will consider one year of outpatient or inpatient coding experience, utilizing ICD-10-CM and CPT codes in lieu of 6 months Emergency Department coding experience.Or
• Internal transfers: will consider one year Coder 1 experience at Tri-City Medical Center in lieu of 6 months Emergency Department coding experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Wound Care Clinic encounters and Infusion Center coding experience utilizing CPT and/or ICD-10-CM codes, preferred.

• Requires (1) one of the following:

Current Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
Current Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
Current Certified Coding Associate (CCA)
Current Certified Professional Coder (CPC)

  Observes and reports unusual patterns in documentation (physician and/or nursing) that requires additional steps research in order for coding to be completed.
  Responsible for on-going education to maintain current professional certification. Responsible for the review and comprehension of current information regarding coding and compliance issues.
  Adheres to the AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding developed by the AHIMA Council on Coding and Classification.
  Performs other related duties as requested by Management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Successful completion of coding skills assessment with a score of at least 70% that evaluates application of candidate’s knowledge, required.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, compliance and reimbursement guidelines, required.
