Job summary

Washington University in St. Louis is seeking a Medical Coding Specialist to review medical record documentation and determine the appropriate billing codes.

The role involves coding E/M to CPT codes and diagnoses to ICD codes, meeting with physicians to review documentation, and guiding staff on terminology and policy interpretation. Ideal candidates may have AHIMA or AAPC credentials, knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding, and experience in medical coding.

Qualifications

  • Must have one of the following coding credentials: AHIMA (CCA, CCS, or CCS-P) or AAPC (CPC, CPC-A, CPC-H, CPC-H-A, or specialty credentials).
  • Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding.
  • Previous coding experience preferred or equivalent to associate’s degree in a related field.

  • Codes evaluation and management to appropriate CPT codes and diagnoses to ICD-9 (or ICD-10) codes.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Reviews the documentation in the record to identify all pertinent facts necessary to select the comprehensive diagnoses and procedures that fully describe the patients conditions and treatment.
  • Codes evaluation and management to appropriate CPT code and codes diagnosis to appropriate ICD-9 code.
  • Meets with physicians to review documentation, resolve coding and secure signature of all unsigned dates of service, tagging files for follow up.
  • Acts as lead person and assists coders with IBC staff with medical terminology and policy interpretation as required.
  • Assists with efforts to increase physician awareness of documentation requirements.
  • Prepares case reports and initiates follow-up for billing process.

Salary Range

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University.
