Washington University in St. Louis is seeking a medical coder to review patient records and assign CPT and ICD codes for billing.
This role supports physicians and coders, with a hybrid schedule requiring occasional in-office visits in Jefferson City. AHIMA or AAPC credentials are preferred, and no specific prior experience is required.

Position reviews medical record documentation to determine appropriate billing codes and necessary documentation.
Reviews the documentation in the record to identify all pertinent facts necessary to select the comprehensive diagnoses and procedures that fully describe the patients conditions and treatment. Codes evaluation and management to appropriate CPT code and codes diagnosis to appropriate ICD-9 code. Meets with physicians to review documentation, resolve coding and secure signature of all unsigned dates of service, tagging files for follow up. Acts as lead person and assists coders with IBC staff with medical terminology and policy interpretation as required. Assists with efforts to increase physician awareness of documentation requirements. Prepares case reports and initiates follow-up for billing process.
Job Location/Working Conditions Normal office environment. Primarily remote with the exception of coming into the office at least once a month. Physical Effort Typically sitting at desk or table. Equipment Office equipment.

Required Qualifications: Must have one of the following coding credentials: AHIMA (CCA, CCS, or CCS-P); AAPC (CPC, CPC-A, CPC-H, CPC-H-A, or one of the AAPC specialty-specific coding credentials (the specialty-specific credential is only valid for that employee's department).
Previous coding experience or experience equivalent to an associate's degree in a related field.
Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding.

Grade C10-H Salary Range $26.25 - $39.36 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
