Job summary

State of Vermont’s Vermont Division of Fire Safety seeks an Assistant State Fire Marshal for the Springfield Regional Office. The role focuses on construction document review, permitting, and office-based duties with independence under a Regional Manager.

The position requires strong technical skills, multitasking, and the ability to support field inspectors. Office-based with limited remote work at supervisor discretion.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or higher in engineering, architecture, fire safety or closely related field.
• High School/Vocational diploma with 3+ years in building trades/inspection OR 5+ years in related technical fields.
• Certification as a fire inspector or fire plans examiner from a recognized program.

Responsibilities

• Provide customer service to walk-in customers.
• Review, respond to emails and phone calls or delegate responses.
• Provide code support to field-based fire inspectors.
• Issue construction permits for a wide range of building systems and projects.
• Review construction documents with design professionals from various fields.
• Receive and review permit applications for new construction and renovations of public buildings.
