Job summary

City of Commerce seeks an entry-level Code Enforcement Assistant to support investigation, inspection, and enforcement of municipal codes under supervision. You will handle inquiries, assist with investigations, and help ensure compliance with health, safety and zoning regulations.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, a California driver's license and PC-832 training within six months of hire. This is a part-time/limited-term city position with benefits described in the employee

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least 1 year of progressively responsible public contact experience in enforcement of codes, public laws or guidelines involving investigative or inspection skills.
• Valid California driver’s license with a safe driving record.
• Certified training in California Penal Code, Section 832 (PC-832) Laws of Arrest required within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Enforces City codes and ordinances related to nuisances, zoning, weed abatement, housing, and other compliance matters.
• Explains code violations and enforcement issues; provides guidance within authorized scope.
• Responds to complaints about potential code violations and discusses resolutions with owners/agents.
• Conducts investigations and analyzes information against code requirements; documents findings.
• Issues letters of violation and citations following established procedures; follows up on compliance.
• Prepares reports and notices; attends meetings and training; responds to emergencies as needed.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
