The Village of Port Jefferson is seeking a dedicated and community-minded individual to join our team as a Code Enforcement Officer. This is a civilian position responsible for ensuring compliance with the Village’s local codes and ordinances — helping to maintain the safety, appearance, and quality of life in our community.

Please Note: This is not a law enforcement position

Responsibilities Include:

• Patrolling the Village by foot and vehicle to identify violations of local codes and ordinances (such as, but not limited to: littering, noise complaints, illegal peddling, dumping, and parking violations).
• Investigating complaints regarding the potential violation of local codes and ordinances, from residents, businesses, and other agencies.
• Issuing summonses and documenting violations when appropriate.
• Possibly testifying in Court, if required
• Immediately alerting the Police Department when criminal activity is observed.
• Preparing clear and accurate reports of enforcement activities.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

• Strong knowledge of local codes and ordinances or willingness and ability to learn.
• Familiarity with the geography of Port Jefferson is a plus.
• Ability to enforce local codes with professionalism, fairness, and impartiality.
• Strong communication skills — both written and verbal.
• Ability to work independently and use sound judgment.
• Ability to maintain composure.
• High school diploma, vocational school certificate in a related field, or equivalent (GED).
• Valid New York State driver’s license (required at time of hire and throughout employment).
• Job Type: Part-time
  • 20 hours per week maximum
  • Nights & Weekends - Friday & Saturday evenings; Start Time: Between 4 PM and 6 PM; End Time: By midnight (12 AM)
• Memorial Day to Labor Day: opportunity for hours to be expanded to 40 hours per week.
