Job summary

The City of Conroe is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer to ensure compliance with City and State codes. Under limited supervision, you will investigate complaints, identify violations, and draft citations. Strong independent thinking and knowledge of local laws are essential.

Preferred Spanish speaking ability and certification in Code Enforcement. Valid Texas driver’s license required. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement, and more.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with two years of Code Enforcement experience or related experience.
  • Some college in Natural Science and two years of environmental health experience or related field preferred.
  • Associate's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Health or related field preferred.

Job description

JOB SUMMARY

This position ensures compliance with applicable City Ordinances and State Health and Safety Codes and other Federal and State regulations for the City of Conroe. Under limited supervision, the position responds and investigates complaints and identifies alleged violations of Codes in the City of Conroe. This position must have an enhanced knowledge of City Codes and must possess the ability for independent thinking regarding each incident. This position will write citations and will be the catalyst for resolving or convicting offenders. Ability to speak Spanish strongly preferred.



QUALIFICATIONS


Education and Experience

High school diploma or G.E.D. with two years of Code Enforcement experience or other related experience. Some college level courses in Natural Science and two years of experience in environmental health or a qualified field preferred. Alternatively, an associate's degree in Environment Science, Environmental Health or related field is preferred.



Special Requirements


  • Possession of a valid Texas class \"C\" driver's license or higher.

  • Certification and licensed by the State of Texas as a Code Enforcement Officer or able to obtain the Code Officer Certification within a 12-month period. Must maintain Code Enforcement Certification.

  • Health and Safety, non-structural Code Enforcement Officer Certificate preferred.

  • Ability to speak Spanish strongly preferred.

  • Skill in preparing and communicating an educational program regarding Code Enforcement issues.

  • Skill in preparing clear and concise reports, including oral, written and audio/visual presentations.

  • Ability to remain calm, make quality decisions, always maintain a professional demeanor and attitude including during stressful and tense situations.

  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize and manage projects and workflow.

  • Read and interpret maps, plats, codes, ordinances and regulations.

  • Ability to operate a vehicle.

  • Ability to field inspect complaint sites, walk non-conforming sites and climb ladders.

  • Ability to listen and follow instructions from a supervisor.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Requires the ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Work involves a lot of walking. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, grasping, hearing, lift, mental acuity, reaching, speaking, talking, visual acuity and walking.
