Cayuga County New York is seeking a Building Inspector to review plans, inspect buildings, and enforce local building codes, zoning ordinances, and the NYS Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalency, plus an Associate's degree or 60 credits toward a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering or related field, or two years of related construction experience. Training and certification within 12 months may be required.

Qualifications

  • Experience in building construction, maintenance, or related field.
  • Two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of training.

Responsibilities

  • Administers and enforces the NYS Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and related laws.
  • Inspects buildings/structures for compliance with code, zoning, and permits.
  • Reviews plans and specifications for building permits before issuance.
  • Inspects during construction or alteration for compliance with approved plans.
  • Issues building permits and certificates of occupancy.
  • Explains code requirements to contractors and the public.
  • Maintains records and attends planning or zoning board meetings.
