Job summary

Gilder Search Group seeks an experienced Code Consultant to join our Building Code & Fire/Life Safety team in Toronto. The role focuses on applying the Ontario Building Code and NBCC to diverse projects and guiding design teams on code-compliance strategies.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years of building code consulting experience, strong technical writing, and the ability to mentor junior staff while handling multiple projects in a multidisciplinary environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in building code consulting, building regulations, or a related discipline within the building industry.
  • Strong knowledge of the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and National Building Code of Canada (NBCC).
  • Experience working on commercial, residential, institutional, healthcare, industrial, or mixed-use building projects.
  • Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform building code analysis and prepare detailed code compliance reports.
  • Interpret and apply the Ontario Building Code, NBCC, and applicable standards.
  • Advise project teams on code compliance strategies during planning, design, and construction.
  • Review architectural and engineering drawings for code compliance.
  • Participate in meetings with architects, developers, engineers, municipalities, and AHJs.
  • Conduct occupant load, exiting, fire separation, barrier-free design, and spatial separation reviews.
  • Provide alternative solution assessments and performance-based code evaluations where applicable.
  • Support permit submissions and respond to plan review comments.
  • Stay current with changes to building codes, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to technical knowledge sharing within the team.

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Code Consultant to join our growing Building Code & Fire/Life Safety team in Toronto. This role is ideal for a professional with a strong understanding of the Ontario Building Code (OBC), National Building Code of Canada (NBCC), and building regulatory requirements who enjoys working with architects, engineers, developers, and authorities having jurisdiction to deliver code-compliant design solutions.

You will provide technical expertise throughout all stages of project development, helping clients navigate complex building code requirements across a wide variety of commercial, residential, institutional, and mixed-use developments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform building code analysis and prepare detailed code compliance reports.
  • Interpret and apply the Ontario Building Code, National Building Code of Canada, and applicable standards.
