Under general supervision provided by the Code Compliance Manager, the Codde Compliance Officer willinspect and enforce all applicable city, county, and state laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations related to the identification, improvement, and rehabilitation of environmental hazards on public and private premises such as fire and health hazards, nuisance violations, and unsafe building conditions. The work requires effective communication skills, the desire to learn ordinances and educate citizens, and the ability to interact with upset or angry citizens with an even temperament.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position. The days and hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Knowledge of: General state and local laws, ordinances and codes related to environmental hazards and public health nuisances such as zoning, home occupations, signs, high weeds, trash, illegal dumping, junked vehicles, and minimum building standards. Knowledge of safe methods for securing condemned and unsafe properties or pool areas. Knowledge of methods for negotiating, mediating and resolving customer complaints and concerns.
Skills in: Learning and applying assigned provisions of the municipal code; communicating effectively (both oral and in writing); and using Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Bilingual communication skills in Spanish are preferred but not required.
Ability to: Work in all types of weather conditions for extended periods; establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with the public, other City staff, and appointed and elected officials; assist in a variety of department operations; perform special projects and assignments as requested; and use a personal computer, including word processing and spreadsheet software. May be subject to repetitive motion including typing and data entry and extended periods of driving. May be subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, fumes, infectious diseases, toxic waste, airborne and waterborne pathogens, unsafe and unhealthy building conditions, and rough or unstable terrain. May be subject to extended periods of bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing ladders and stairs, as well as lifting or carrying building materials when securing condemned or unsafe buildings or pools.
