Job summary

The City of Shreveport is seeking a Property Standards Inspector to receive and investigate complaints, enforce ordinances, and conduct inspections in designated areas. You will cite violations, perform re-inspections, and interpret the Property Standards ordinance for officials and the public.

This role offers independent field work, with opportunities to present testimony before boards and officials, and to prepare formal reports for review by higher authorities.

Qualifications

• High School or GED equivalent.
• Two (2) years experience in the building trades or related field.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and other employees; perform various mathematical computations using linear measurement; research for information; write clear, legible and concise reports.
• Communication skills, both in writing and verbal form.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
• Must possess a valid Louisiana driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Receives and investigates complaints of nuisances and alleged violations and enforces Property Standards ordinance.
• Cites property owners and others for codes violations and performs re-inspections.
• Interprets Property Standards ordinance for officials, citizens and groups.
• Prepares reports on work and related activities for submission to higher authorities.
• May appear before appeals boards and judiciary bodies.
• Works with considerable independence on field inspections and decision-making.
• Consults with superiors on difficult cases.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
