Job summary

The City of Charleston in West Virginia is seeking a qualified professional to enforce the zoning ordinance and building codes on existing structures within the city. You will inspect residential rental properties, investigate code violations, and coordinate demolition and preservation activities, reporting findings to authorities.

Responsibilities include attending community meetings, testifying in court when needed, and maintaining records in the city’s permitting system.

Qualifications

• Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
• Experience in demolition inspection or closely related experience.
• Must possess ICC Property Maintenance Certification.
• Must possess State of WV Property Maintenance Inspector License.
• Valid Driver's License.

Responsibilities

• Schedule and complete scheduled residential rental property inspections.
• Receive and investigate complaints for code violations promptly.
• Issue warning letters, fines, or citations when violations are found.
• Testify in municipal court with documentation confirming facts.
• Coordinate demolition-related tasks and asbestos surveys as needed.
• Enter data in the Tyler Enterprise Permitting and Licensing Module.
• Attend community meetings and engage with stakeholders when required.
• Investigate un-permitted work and conduct site checks for preservation clearances.
