Job summary

The City of San Mateo is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer I/II. The role conducts investigative abatement work and enforces state and city codes for land and structures, with supervision from senior staff.

Duties include handling complaints, reviews of plans, interviews and site investigations, and generating case reports. The position may be filled at either level based on experience, and may involve presenting cases at hearings and coordinating with other agencies.

Qualifications

• Two years of undergraduate coursework from an accredited college or university and one year of experience with the public in enforcement, inspection, investigative or public relations work, or six months of experience enforcing codes and ordinances relating to planning, zoning, building, or health and safety.
• Two years of undergraduate coursework and two years of enforcement experience for Code Enforcement Officer II.

Responsibilities

• Receive complaints of violations of city codes and ordinances for residential, commercial and industrial property.
• Review case files, zoning and related documentation; conduct interviews, field investigations and site surveillance.
• Determine compliance requirements and prepare case information for hearings and enforcement actions.
• Coordinate with other agencies and provide training to staff as needed.
• Prepare written reports, memos and letters related to enforcement cases.
