Job Description
General Summary: The Extended Day Caregiver provides age‑appropriate activities and services to children enrolled in the Extended Day Program. This position reports directly to the Extended Day Care Program Manager.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides child‑care support services.
- Develops positive relationships with children, parents, staff members, administration, and community members through effective written and verbal communication.
- Plans and implements age‑appropriate activities for students ages 3‑12 both indoors and outdoors.
- Performs attendance and other record‑keeping as directed.
- Assists in maintaining a clean and safe facility and playground at all times.
- Handles behavior management for students enrolled in the Extended Day Program.
- Maintains discipline and reports behavior or discipline concerns to the Program Manager.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding student and family records and information.
- Participates in staff development and professional development activities as offered (up to 16 clock hours per calendar year).
- Administers children’s medication and first aid as needed and completes required documentation.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- High school graduate (18+ years of age) with prior experience working/interacting with children.
- Some Early Childhood or Child Development college coursework highly preferred.
- Current first aid and infant, child, and adult CPR training, or willingness to obtain at next available offering.
- Willingness to complete up to 16 clock hours of professional development training, in addition to new hire requirements as required by MiLEAP Child Care Licensing regulations.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Must be able to report on a regular, consistent basis and maintain punctual attendance.
- Duties include frequent walking and physical activity, use of hands and arms for signaling, and light lifting/carrying up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to move about the classroom/building and school property, including sitting on the floor, bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work‑related tasks with and without students.
- Ability to listen and communicate orally and in writing to a diverse population.
- Ability to work effectively with children, parents, colleagues, administrative staff, and community members.
- Ability to discern information and formulate appropriate actions, critically think, and provide solutions.
- Ability to work efficiently.
Environmental Conditions
Incumbents work in indoor and outdoor school environments with moderate to loud noise levels, crowds, and allergens. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures, including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes working around students, school equipment, and office equipment.
Work Schedules
Must be available to report during the school year consistent with the district’s school year calendar. May require irregular hours, including evenings and weekends for school events or professional development activities.
