Job summary

Cummins Inc. is seeking a Co-op student in the United States to contribute to materials science and engineering projects across design, manufacturing, and quality domains.

You will apply knowledge in materials science, analytical chemistry, and surface engineering to guide material and process choices, perform characterization, and support failure analyses, while collaborating with cross-functional teams and documenting findings.

Qualifications

• Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a relevant field (Engineering/Materials/ Chemistry).
• GPA 2.5+ preferred; full-time enrollment in a U.S. college or university.
• Must reside in the continental U.S. and be available for 40 hours per week for 4–12 months.

Responsibilities

• Apply materials science/engineering/analytical chemistry principles to design, manufacturing and quality goals.
• Collaborate cross-functionally on projects requiring materials guidance such as selection, failure analysis, and characterization.
• Optimize performance through structure–property–processing relationships and surface engineering techniques.
• Utilize spectroscopy, microscopy, mechanical testing, and NDE tools on in-process or field-returned parts.
• Document problem resolutions and communicate results to stakeholders for project advancement.
