Job summary

SteelFab, Inc. in Charlotte, NC is seeking a CNC Programmer to prepare, nest, and optimize cutting programs for structural steel fabrication. You will translate shop drawings into efficient CNC programs, minimize material waste, and ensure parts meet specifications on our CNC machines.

Qualifications

  • Accurately translate designs into CNC programs for cutting machines.

  • Understand basic geometry and machining terminology for setups.

Responsibilities

  • Import part geometry (DXF/DSTV/STP or similar) and prepare CNC programs.
  • Nest parts efficiently to minimize scrap and maximize material yield.
  • Program bevel cuts, copes, and geometry to job specs and standards.
  • Review drawings to verify part accuracy before programming.
  • Set and adjust cut parameters for different materials and thicknesses.
  • Troubleshoot programming or nesting errors with shop floor.
  • Collaborate with detailing and production teams for on-time releases.
  • Maintain nest files, cut lists, and material usage records.
  • Support continuous improvement in nesting efficiency and cut quality.

Job Summary

CNC Programmer to prepare, nest, and optimize cutting programs for our structural steel fabrication operations. This role is responsible for translating detailed shop drawings into efficient, accurate CNC program, minimizing material waste, and ensuring parts are produced to specification on our CNC machines. The ideal candidate has hands‑on nesting software experience and a solid understanding of structural steel fabrication and bevel/weld‑prep requirements.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. citizen (this role involves access to Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) under a U.S. defense contract).
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
Essential Job Functions
  • Import part geometry (DXF/DSTV/STP or similar) and prepare accurate CNC programs for CNC machinery.
  • Nest parts efficiently using nesting software to minimize scrap and maximize material yield.
  • Program bevel cuts, copes, and part geometry to job specification and applicable structural steel standards.
  • Review shop drawings and structural steel detailing packages (e.g. from Tekla, Advanced Steel, or similar) to verify part accuracy before programming.
  • Set and adjust cut parameters (amperage, cut height, speed, kerf) for different material thicknesses and types.
  • Troubleshoot programming or nesting errors and coordinate with shop floor personnel to resolve cutting issues in real time.
  • Collaborate with detailing, and production teams to support on‑time job releases.
  • Maintain accurate records of nest files, cut lists, and material usage reporting.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to nesting efficiency, cut quality, and program turn around time.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Basic computer proficiency (file management, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Excel)
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy under production deadlines.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural steel shop drawings, cut lists, and fabrication specifications.
  • Working knowledge of basic geometry and machining terms (e.g., radius, chamfer, fillet, bevel angle, tolerance)
Preferred
  • Prior experience with CAD/CAM nesting software systems (Shopdata, OmniWin, ProNest, or similar).
  • Experience with structural detailing software (Tekla, Advanced Steel, or similar)
  • Background in structural steel fabrication
