We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Grinder (OD/ID) to join our team. The Grinder will be responsible for operating and maintaining grinding machines, focusing on external (OD) and internal (ID) grinding processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong attention to detail, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to produce high-quality finished products.
Essential Functions:
- Machine Setup & Operation:
- Set up and operate OD and ID grinding machines to perform precision grinding on gears, shafts, and other cylindrical components.
- Select appropriate grinding wheels, tooling, and machine settings based on material type, blueprint specifications, and required surface finish.
- Balance and dress grinding wheels to ensure precision and efficiency.
- Blueprint Reading & Quality Control:
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work instructions to determine grinding parameters.
- Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and CMMs to verify part dimensions and tolerances.
- Maintain strict adherence to quality standards, identifying and correcting defects before they impact production.
- Process Optimization & Troubleshooting:
- Adjust feeds, speeds, and techniques to optimize cycle times while maintaining part integrity.
- Troubleshoot grinding issues like chatter, burn, and dimensional inconsistencies.
- Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to refine processes and improve efficiency.
- Equipment Maintenance & Safety:
- Perform routine maintenance, including lubrication, coolant management, and wheel changes.
- Follow all safety procedures and wear PPE.
- Keep the work area clean and organized, complying with 5S and lean principles.
- Collaboration & Documentation:
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, engineers, and inspectors.
- Complete logs, inspection reports, and documentation accurately.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
Position starts at $24 per hour.
Qualifications & Skills:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 3-5 years of OD/ID grinding experience in a precision manufacturing environment, preferably gear production.
- Proficiency in manual and CNC OD/ID grinders.
- Knowledge of grinding wheel selection, dressing, and balancing.
- Understanding of materials like hardened steels and their grinding characteristics.
- Ability to interpret GD&T symbols and use measurement tools accurately.
- Attention to detail, troubleshooting skills, and work ethic.
- Commitment to safety and cleanliness.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with CNC OD/ID grinding machines.
- Knowledge of gear manufacturing processes, including honing and center lapping.
- Experience in aerospace, automotive, or defense manufacturing environments.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing and continuous improvement.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Standing for extended periods.
- Lifting up to 25 lbs., bending, and handling components.
- Exposure to coolant, dust, and noise, with PPE provided.
- Focus and safety adherence when working with high-speed equipment.
