Hazelett Corporation is seeking a highly skilled CNC Mill Machinist to join our Vermont manufacturing team. This low-volume, high-mix shop requires precise setups for short-run, complex components on vertical and horizontal CNC mills, with careful interpretation of prints, GD&T, and CAD data.

You will prove out new G-code programs, establish fixtures, optimize tool selections, and inspect parts with micrometers and gauges.

Qualifications

• 3+ years independent CNC mill setups in low-volume/high-mix environments.
• Proven ability to set up from scratch, establish fixtures, and verify setups.
• Hands-on experience reading and editing G-code at the machine.
• Skilled with micrometers, calipers, bore gauges and GD&T symbols.
• Experience rigging heavy/irregular workpieces with overhead cranes and forklifts.
• Strong mechanical aptitude, safety mindset and self-direction.

Responsibilities

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Hazelett Corporation is seeking a highly skilled, detail-oriented CNC Mill Machinist to join our manufacturing team. Hazelett designs, builds, and services custom continuous casting equipment used globally across the non-ferrous metals industry. Because our equipment is tailored to specialized continuous casting applications, our machine shop operates as a low-volume, high-mix custom manufacturing environment—not a repetitive, high-volume production line. You will work on varied, complex, and low-quantity workpieces where quality, mechanical intuition, and precise setup capability are critical.

Full-Time Schedule Options: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shift available, with 4x10 schedule options Monday-Thursday. *20% Shift Premium for 2nd and 3rd shifts.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

• Setup & Production Execution: Perform complete, independent setups of vertical and horizontal CNC milling machines for short-run, complex, high-precision components.
• Workholding & Rigging: Determine optimal workholding strategies and safely rig large/irregular castings or forgings into machines using overhead cranes and hoists.
• Blueprint & Technical Interpretation: Interpret complex engineering prints, GD&T geometric tolerances, CAD models, and shop sketches to establish accurate machining processes and datum structures.
• Control & Program Adjustments: Load, prove out, and optimize G-code programs at the controller. Perform tool length offsets, work coordinate offsets, cutter compensation, and minor code edits to accommodate material variations or design changes.
• Tooling & Process Optimization: Select appropriate tooling, insert grades, feeds, and speeds based on varying workpiece materials.
• In-Process Quality & Inspection: Measure and inspect first-piece and finished parts using micrometers, depth gauges, bore gauges, indicators, and height stands to maintain tight tolerances across unique job lots.
• Continuous Safety & Care: Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workstation, adhering to safety protocols while handling raw materials, heavy rigging, and precision tooling.

Requirements

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

• Experience: 3+ years of experience performing independent setups and operating CNC mills in a low-volume/high-mix job shop or custom machinery manufacturing environment.
• Technical Setup Proficiency: Proven ability to set up workpieces from scratch, set offsets, establish fixtures, prove out new G-code programs safely (dry runs/single block), and trouble-shoot setup issues.
• Code Familiarity: Hands-on experience reading and editing G-code/M-code directly at the machine interface.
• Precision Measurement: Skilled in the use of precision tools (micrometers, vernier calipers, bore gauges, dial indicators) and reading GD&T symbols.
• Rigging & Material Handling: Experience with overhead crane operation, rigging heavy or irregularly shaped workpieces, and forklift operation.
• Adaptability & Problem Solving: Strong spatial awareness, mechanical aptitude, and a self-directed mindset capable of transitioning between different parts, setups, and materials efficiently.

The base pay for this full-time position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr. Your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. In addition, our ranges are determined by role, level, and location. *20% Shift Premium for 2nd and 3rd shifts.
