Vertical Mill Operator - Summary of Essential Job Functions:
CNC operators use computer-controlled machines to fabricate parts from metal. Produce machined parts by programming, setting up, and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine; maintaining quality and safety standards for custom parts for ACMF customers.
- Program Vertical Mill by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches.
- Calculate requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs.
- Set up Vertical Mill by installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers; indicating vices; tramming heads.
- Load feed mechanism by lifting stock into position.
- Verify settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample workpieces; perform test operations to ensure the product is made to specifications.
- Maintain specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling, and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
- Maintain safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
- Run the machine and monitor it for problems.
- Make adjustments to the operating speed based on vibrations and sounds that may indicate a malfunction.
- Inspect materials from waterjet, laser, saw, and/or weldments.
- Provide a high level of attention to detail and focus on assigned tasks.
- Perform all dimensional inspections.
- Operate multiple machines.
- Maintain equipment by completing preventive maintenance; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.
- Detect and report defective materials or questionable conditions to the supervisor.
- Perform prescribed maintenance; clean and maintain equipment.
- Operate and use required tools and equipment safely and skillfully.
Summary of Secondary Job Functions:
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Certificate or associate's degree in machine or manufacturing technology.
- Relevant coursework in blueprint reading, CAD, machining principles, and metals.
- Minimum 1 year manufacturing experience in machining.
- Ability to read blueprints.
- Knowledge of tooling and tool maintenance.
- Familiarity with preferred machines: Mighty Viper, Haas VF9, VF6, VF4, DMG – Mori Seiki, etc.
- Proven measurement and math skills, including fractions/decimals.
- Ability to distinguish material types: Aluminum, Steel, Stainless Steel, Copper, Brass.
- Forklift operation experience.
- Self-motivated, team-oriented, safety-conscious, able to perform physical activities (lifting up to 75 lbs, bending, standing, climbing, walking).
