Job summary

laborup is hiring a CNC Machinist to program, set up, and run CNC lathes and mills in our Birmingham, AL machine shop. You will input zero and reference points, set tool offsets, and prove out part programs before the first piece runs.

You will also operate manual and conventional machines, read blueprints for tolerances, and apply geometry to setup calculations while collaborating with engineers. This role requires accuracy and safe lifting of up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

  • Programs and proves out CNC lathes and mills based on prints.
  • Sets up chucks, collets, tooling, and indicating devices.
  • Reads blueprints to determine dimensions and tolerances.
  • Applies geometry and trigonometry to setup calculations.
  • Occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Programming: Enter zero and reference points, offsets, and conditional switches.
  • Program proving: Prove out part programs before production runs.
  • Setups: Install and adjust chucks, collets, tooling, and indicating vices.
  • Print reading: Study blueprints to determine dimensions and tolerances.
  • Shop math: Calculate setup requirements using geometry and trigonometry.
  • Inspection: Verify settings by measuring first-run parts.
  • Troubleshooting: Detect malfunctions and adjust controls.
  • Preventive maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on machines.
