Job summary

Ducommun Incorporated in St. Croix Falls, WI, seeks an experienced CNC Machinist III to program, set up, and operate complex mills and lathes, aligning fixtures, editing G-code, and optimizing toolpaths.

You will read 2D/3D drawings, monitor tolerances with precision inspection tools, mentor junior machinists, and ensure safety and ITAR compliance in a fast-paced shop environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent experience required.
• 5+ years of relevant CNC machining experience or equivalent education/certification.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and GD&T.
• Proven ability to diagnose complex machining issues and optimize toolpaths.

Responsibilities

• Program, set up, and operate CNC mills and lathes with minimal supervision.
• Select and change cutting tools; load raw materials and verify dimensions.
• Review toolpaths using CAD/CAM to optimize processes and reduce downtime.
• Perform in-process inspections with micrometers, calipers, and other gauges to ensure tolerances.
• Mentor and support fellow machinists and operators to resolve complex issues.

Essential Functions:

• Standard knowledge of G-codes, write or edit G-code, program adjustments, set up complex tooling, align fixtures, and set precise work offsets with little to no supervision.
• Perform independent tool changes, selecting proper cutting tools, loading raw materials in CNC mills and/or lathes.
• Deep understanding of speeds, feeds, and metal properties.
• Identify surface finish issues, tool wear, or dimensional drift and adjust speeds and feeds. to fix them. Finding the root cause of a tough issue and figuring out a smart way to fix it.
• Read and interpret complex 2D and 3D technical drawings, geometric dimensioning, and tolerancing.
• Adjust quickly to new tools, changing environments, and emerging trends.
• Diagnose sudden mechanical or programming errors quickly to reduce machine downtime.
• Working knowledge of CAD/CAM software to review and verify toolpaths and simulate operations for process optimization.
• Use precise inspection tools like micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, and optical comparators to verify that parts meet exact tolerances.
• Perform in-process inspections to ensure parts stay within tight production tolerances.
• Maintain strict safety and quality standards to avoid costly scrap and errors.
• Responsible for protecting and maintaining all Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) appropriately to prevent unauthorized access, dissemination, or use of this information, documentation, or products; including authorized and proper use of such information in regard to marking, storing, transmitting, and destruction of data.
• Support all visitors and security policies to protect ITAR/EAR/CMMC/CUI information, documents, products, etc. from unauthorized access by informing management immediately of any concerns.
• Responsible for the proper handling and management of hazardous waste generated in employee’s work area.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Regular and acceptable attendance is an essential function of this job.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Serves as a technical resource for CNC machining, providing guidance and mentorship to fellow machinists and machine operators and supporting the resolution of complex machining and production issues.
• Communicate and collaborate effectively with shift supervisors and diverse groups to reach shared goals through innovative ideas and approaches.
• Ability to independently diagnose complex machining problems with advanced mechanical reasoning and troubleshooting
• Ability to interpret technical data and make sound decisions
• Ability to act on constructive feedback and communicate technical issues and recommended solutions to different audiences such as supervisors, engineers, and machinists
• Able to analyze data, solve complex problems, and make logical decisions, share ideas clearly through speaking and writing, while actively listening to others.
• Organize workflow efficiently to meet strict production deadlines.
• Plan schedule in advance so tasks are completed timely.
• CAD/CAM software knowledge to verify toolpaths and simulate operations is a plus.
• Local to the St. Croix Falls, WI facility.

Required Experience and Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent experience required.
• 5+ years of relevant CNC machining experience, or an equivalent combination of formal machining education, certification, and demonstrated advanced technical proficiency.

Work Environment and Safety Equipment Required:

• Manufacturing Shop environment with open floor space, can be noisy at times.
• Able to work onsite per business needs and per employee’s standard hours.
• Able to wear required Personal Protective Equipment constantly.
• Ability to travel occasionally.

This position requires access to export-controlled information and/or hardware, and candidates must be U.S. Persons that comply with all U.S. Export control laws and regulation.
