Job description

Conductix-Wampfler, a leading global manufacturer in the mobile electrification market, is looking to add a career-minded machinist to their team. We are looking for someone with a quality-focused and continuous improvement mindset. In this position, you will assist with daily production, scheduling, and setup of both CNC and conventional machines. You will get to work with a variety of materials and components and work through special setups for customer projects.

Qualified candidates will possess the following:

  • Associates degree or completion of an apprenticeship in Machine/Tool and Die Technology
  • Ability to run and set up both conventional and program CNC equipment
  • 3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in a quality environment
  • Exhibit problem-solving skills

CNC Machinist responsibilities include:

  • Set up and operate computer numerical controlled (CNC) vertical machining centers, CNC lathes, and 4-axis controllers to produce high tolerance and precision metallic and nonmetallic parts.
  • Follow all safety policies, procedures, and guidelines per Conductix-Wampfler Employee Handbook, Haz Com program, Lockout Tagout, employee training, and safety documents.
  • Read, study, and accurately interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerance of finished workpieces or parts, sequences of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Create, adjust, or modify CNC programs either manually or with Computer Aided Machining software (CAM).
  • Measure, mark, and confirm specification dimensions and reference points on material or workpieces as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, and drill presses.
  • Calculate and set machine controls to regulate machining factors such as speeds, feeds, coolant flow, depth and angle of cut.
  • Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions, collisions of machine or tools, out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verify conformance of quality of finished workpiece to specifications through drawings specifications, fit or function of a part, or measurement using precision instruments.
  • Set up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
  • Assist with determining best practice machining methods.
  • Offer labor times, rates of machining, and feasibility for cost estimating.
  • Assemble parts into complete assembly per drawings, fit and function, and customer specifications.
  • Confers, discusses, and analyzes conformity, application, or function of completed parts with engineers, internal customers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
  • Design, produce, and implement fixtures, setup tools, or guarding to safely and efficiently hold or produce material for CNC machining applications.
  • Meet and work scheduled overtime hour requirements based on customer demand, requirements, and schedules.
  • Display acceptance and willingness for new and adaptive learning opportunities for work flexing into other areas or departments as needed or assigned for cross-training opportunities.
  • Adhere to and follow all applicable Conductix-Wampfler ISO and Quality standards, written work instructions, and policies.
  • Understand, support, implement, and sustain 5S program initiatives and goals as required and assigned.
  • Support and uphold the Conductix-Wampfler Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) policy.
  • Exemplify and uphold core values.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school and two years related experience and/or training; or a minimum of four years of job shop related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Or certification of completion of a Certified Apprenticeship Program.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business and technical procedures. Ability to write. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

A machinist needs to be able to accomplish the following to the satisfaction of management or possess a Degree in Machine Technology:

  • Single point threading I.D. O.D. and taper pipe threads. Need to be able to look up in the Machinists handbook and calculate setup and run threading operations.
  • Calculate speeds, feeds and chip loads for turning, boring and milling.
  • Be able to understand the geometry of tooling and surface finishes.
  • Sharpen drills, carbide and high-speed steels for machining operations.
  • Take most any job in the shop and be able to machine to print.
  • When you have a job, be able to write the procedure in which you will create the part, how you will hold work and what steps you will take to complete the part.
  • Know the terminology of the equipment in the shop.
  • Learn how to compensate for tool deflection and consistency.
  • Layout and measure bolt circles, coordinates, slots, etc.
  • Select tooling required for the job needed, and know what kind of tooling you are using.
  • Have the specialty measuring tools and know-how to use them in order to make the parts required.
  • Know about tolerance fits and be able to apply them.
  • Need to possess Machinist's handbook and be able to look up information needed to make machined parts.
