Position Summary

The CNC Machinist supports production of the company’s machined sub-assemblies and/or machined final products. This includes the operation of CNC lathes or mills used in the manufacturing of parts out of various grades of metal and plastic. The position follows standard work methods and practices safe work habits to ensure production is as efficient and safe as possible. The CNC Machinist is responsible for optimizing programs, leading complicated setups, and assisting with technical training of the Machine Shop team. The CNC Machinist must also drive behaviors into our MRP system (ALERE), making the system our single source of truth. The CNC Machinist reports directly to the 2nd shift Manager.

Classification

Hourly, Non-Exempt, Full-Time (Monday through Friday, 3:00PM to 11:00PM, and as required to maintain business momentum).

Essential Functions

  • Set up and operate computer-controlled machines to perform one or more machine functions on metal or plastic workpieces.
  • Modify cutting programs to account for problems encountered during operation and then save modified programs per standard filename and archiving conventions.
  • Monitor machine operations and control panel displays, comparing readings to specifications to detect malfunctions. Adjust machine feed and speed, change cutting tools, or adjust machine controls when automatic programming is faulty or if machines malfunction.
  • Check to ensure that workpieces are properly lubricated and cooled during machine operation.
  • Mount, install, align, and secure tools, attachments, fixtures, and workpieces on machines, using hand tools and precision measuring instruments. Stop machines to remove finished workpieces or to change tooling, setup, or workpiece placement, according to required machining sequences. Set up future jobs while machines are operating current jobs.
  • Maintain machines within operator-level scope; remove and replace broken or worn machine components using hand tools. Listen to machines during operation to detect sounds such as those made by dull cutting tools or excessive vibration and adjust to compensate for problems.
  • Measure dimensions of finished workpieces to ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measuring instruments, templates, and fixtures.
  • Operate manual machines and perform deburr operations as needed to flow critical orders through the Machine Shop.
  • Clean machines, tooling, or parts, using solvents or solutions, and rags.
  • Operate with a continual improvement mindset to improve various performance aspects: safety, quality (yield), throughput, on-time delivery, gross profit, and optimal inventory.
  • Suggest improve-the-business projects of varying degrees of effort and impact (e.g. layout changes, process/flow improvements, installation of capital equipment, maintenance of equipment).
  • Support various programs essential to production procedures (e.g. training, safety, housekeeping, employee engagement, security, etc.); document any issues or incidents in a timely manner and follow through to ensure resolution.
  • Maintain assigned areas with respect to safety and 5S. This includes cleaning of assigned areas each day, consolidating trash containers, dumping trash into the compactor, and operating the compactor.
  • Help restock and organize supplies/tooling area as needed.
  • Maintain a culture of accountability and responsibility, understanding that responsibility is broader than accountability.
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned; duties and activities may change over time.

Key Technical Competencies of the Role

  • Mechanical – knowledge of machines and knowledge of design, use, repair, and maintenance of related tooling, hand tools, and gauges.
  • Computerized numerical controlled (CNC) lathes or mills, including multi-axis.
  • Gauges or inspection fixtures (e.g. bore gauges, calipers, dial indicators, pin gauges, ring and plug gauges for threads).
  • Design – general knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in developing machined parts.
  • Computers and Electronics – knowledge of computer hardware and software, including operator-level applications and CNC machine programming.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED Preferred
  • Post-Secondary Certificates, awarded for technical CNC training completed after high school preferred
  • Previous Production Machining Experience
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including listening, some writing, and oral communication
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • ERP system proficiency at user level (e.g. how to clock jobs)
  • Occasional overtime to meet business needs
  • Must be able to routinely lift 25 pounds
  • Must be comfortable working with diverse team members
  • Must be conversant in English for safe and effective performance of the job
  • Must be eligible to work in the US
