Job summary

Pro-Type Industries in Sterling, VA is seeking an experienced CNC laser operator to set up and run laser cutting equipment that produces precision sheet metal parts.

You will read engineering drawings, verify material and program settings, and perform first‑piece and in‑process inspections to ensure tolerances and quality.

The role requires attention to detail, safety discipline, and the ability to work with manufacturing teams in a AS9100‑driven environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience reading prints, blueprints, work orders, and specifications.
  • Experience operating CNC laser cutting equipment in metal fabrication preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and run CNC laser cutting equipment to produce precision sheet‑metal parts.
  • Verify material type, thickness, quantity, and program settings before each job.
  • Perform first‑piece and in‑process inspections using calipers and micrometers.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe laser area according to procedures.
  • Document production and quality data and report issues.

We’re under modern, growth‑minded leadership and invest deeply in training and development—our average tenure is 17 years because people choose to build their careers here.What is this role responsible for?Setting up and running CNC laser cutting equipment to produce precision sheet‑metal parts to plan.Reading work orders, blueprints, engineering drawings, specifications, and CNC programs before every job.Verifying material type, thickness, quantity, program, tooling, and machine settings for each assignment.Safely loading and unloading sheet metal and related materials.Operating per established programs, setup instructions, and procedures.Monitoring machine operation and cutting quality throughout production.Making authorized adjustments to preserve quality, accuracy, and efficiency.Delivering components that meet drawings, tolerances, and quality requirements.Performing first‑piece and in‑process inspections.Using calipers, micrometers, scales, gauges, and other metrology tools to verify specs.Reporting issues with programs, materials, tooling, equipment, drawings, or part quality.Removing finished parts from sheets and labeling/organizing them for the next operation.Completing basic deburring and part cleanup when required.Maintaining identification, handling, and traceability of materials and products.Reducing material waste through proper nesting, material handling, and production procedures.Accurately completing production, quality, material, and job documentation.Managing your queue to align with the Sheet Metal and overall production schedule.Conducting operator‑level inspections, cleaning, and basic preventive maintenance.Keeping the laser area, equipment, and tooling clean, organized, and safe.Following Pro‑Type safety rules, including machine guarding, laser safety, material handling, and PPE.Adhering to AS9100 quality procedures, customer requirements, and internal work instructions.Supporting Sheet Metal and other production activities as directed.Taking on other duties that support Pro‑Type’s success.What do I need to bring?High school diploma or GED; at least 18 years old.Experience operating CNC laser cutting equipment in metal fabrication/manufacturing (preferred).Strong exposure to precision sheet metal manufacturing (strongly preferred).Ability to read and interpret prints, drawings, work orders, and specifications.Basic CNC program knowledge and the ability to follow established programs and setup instructions.Knowledge of sheet metal materials, thicknesses, and fundamental fabrication methods.Ability to identify and verify materials before processing.Comfort with calipers, micrometers, scales, gauges, and other inspection tools.Understanding of dimensional tolerances and inspection criteria.Skill in recognizing cutting, machine, material, and part‑quality issues and escalating appropriately.Mechanical aptitude and a desire to learn CNC laser equipment and processes.High attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate parts.Discipline in following safety, quality, and production procedures.Time‑management skills to meet production schedules.Accuracy with production and quality paperwork.Ability to work independently and with Sheet Metal, Engineering, Quality, and Production teams.Dependable attendance; ability to work assigned schedules and overtime as needed.Ability to stand for long periods; regularly bend, reach, push, pull, and handle sheet metal/components.Capability to lift/move materials and parts consistent with role requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation.Nice to haveExperience with industrial CNC fiber or CO₂ laser cutters.Background in aerospace/defense or AS9100‑certified environments.Experience with CNC nesting or laser programming software.Exposure to punching, bending, forming, deburring, and hardware installation.Experience doing first‑piece and in‑process dimensional inspections.Why Pro‑Type?Competitive pay.Annual fully paid training for continuing education + a professional development plan.Employee recognition programs.Health, dental, vision, sick and vacation leave, on‑site gym, and more.401(k) with a generous employer match.Collaborative, entrepreneurial environment with growth opportunities.Ready to work with a team that puts people first and quality at the center?
