Job summary

Penn Manufacturing Industries is seeking a hands‑on CNC Engineer to support and improve precision CNC machining and programming operations. The role emphasizes shop‑floor engagement and independent development of manufacturing processes with tight tolerances.

The Process Engineer II acts as a technical resource for production and quality teams, applying GD&T, Lean manufacturing, 5S, and Six Sigma to drive measurable improvements while upholding safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering or related field, or equivalent hands‑on manufacturing experience.
  • 3–7 years of experience in CNC machining process engineering or manufacturing engineering.
  • Strong hands‑on experience supporting CNC machining operations in a production environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working in high‑precision machining environments with tight tolerances.
  • Solid working knowledge of GD&T.
  • Experience applying Lean, 5S, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Tool/Fixture Design knowledge.
  • Ability to work independently while supporting team‑based manufacturing operations.

Responsibilities

  • Hands‑on CNC Machining & Programming: support machining operations on the shop floor, develop and optimize CNC processes for tight‑tolerance components, create and validate CNC programs.
  • Troubleshoot complex machining, tooling, and fixturing issues in real time with machinists.
  • Support DFM reviews with emphasis on process capability and tolerance control.
  • Ensure machining processes meet highly precise tolerance requirements.
  • Own assigned machining processes from setup through production sustainment.
  • Identify and implement process improvements reducing scrap, rework, and cycle time variation.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and lead corrective actions for process issues.
  • Develop and maintain standardized work instructions, setup sheets, and process documentation.
  • GD&T & Quality Integration: interpret drawings, support first article inspections, capability studies, and process monitoring.
  • Collaborate with Quality to address nonconformances and improve process stability.
  • Lean, 5S & Six Sigma: support Lean initiatives, 5S, visual management, and Six Sigma projects.
  • Cross‑functional manufacturing support: design fixturing, assist with tooling improvements, support new product introductions.

This role requires strong shop-floor engagement, demonstrated experience working with highly precise machining tolerances, and the ability to independently develop, optimize, and sustain manufacturing processes.

The Process Engineer II acts as a technical resource for production and quality teams, applying GD&T, Lean manufacturing, 5S, and Six Sigma tools to drive measurable process improvements while maintaining Penn Manufacturing Industries’ standards for quality, safety, and operational excellence.

Core Responsibilities (Mid‑Level Scope)
Hands-On CNC Machining & Programming
  • Serve as a hands‑on manufacturing engineer, regularly working on the shop floor to support machining operations.
  • Independently develop, optimize, and sustain CNC machining processes for tight-tolerance, precision components.
  • Create, modify, and validate CNC programs to improve cycle time, quality, and repeatability.
  • Troubleshoot complex machining, tooling, and fixturing issues in real time with machinists.
  • Support Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews with emphasis on process capability and tolerance control.
  • Ensure machining processes consistently meet highly precise machining tolerance requirements.
Process Ownership & Continuous Improvement
  • Own assigned machining processes from setup through production sustainment.
  • Identify and implement process improvements that reduce scrap, rework, and cycle time variation.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and lead corrective actions for process-related issues.

GD&T & Quality Integration

  • Ensure process capability aligns with customer and internal quality expectations.
Lean, 5S & Six Sigma Application
  • Actively support Lean manufacturing initiatives, including 5S, visual management, and waste reduction.
  • Participate in Six Sigma or structured problem‑solving projects focused on reducing variability in precision machining.
  • Train and mentor machinists and operators on standard work and best practices.
Cross‑Functional Manufacturing Support
  • Design fixturing, implement process improvements supporting continuous improvement activities
  • Work daily with Production, Quality, and Engineering teams to support manufacturing execution.
  • Assist with tooling selection, fixture improvements, and process planning.
  • Support new product introductions by establishing robust and repeatable machining processes.
Required Qualifications (Process Engineer II)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field, or equivalent hands‑on manufacturing experience.
  • 3–7 years of experience in CNC machining process engineering or manufacturing engineering.
  • Strong hands‑on experience supporting CNC machining operations in a production environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working in high‑precision machining environments with tight tolerances.
  • Solid working knowledge of GD&T.
  • Experience applying Lean, 5S, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Tool/Fixture Design knowledge

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in precision or high‑mix manufacturing environments.
  • Prior hands‑on machining background (operator, setup, tooling, or programming).
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent certification.
  • Experience with CAM software and tooling optimization for tight tolerance machining.
