Job description

Principal Responsibilities

• Receive and review work assignments; verify required dimensions, tolerances, and the number of parts to be ground.
• Follow established procedures for machine setup and tooling instructions, including selecting proper grind wheels, bushings, collets, and programs; inputting tool and setup values; grinding the first piece, inspecting, and adjusting as needed.
• Dress and form abrasive wheels using standard dressing devices. Mount and secure tools in the machine. Set and adjust wheel spindle speeds, feed rate, travel stops, and taper.
• Operate equipment in auto-cycle mode whenever possible, continually inspecting finished tools for correct dimensions with measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges).
• Enter all production data into the data collection system.
• Monitor equipment performance; report problems and request maintenance to prevent downtime and damage.
• Perform SPC procedures on all jobs.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.
• Maintain a clean work area at all times.

Education

CNC Certificate with emphasis in machine tool operation or 3-5 years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

Skills/Experience

• Experience with basic machine operation or related technical training.
• At least one year of direct machine setup and operation experience, with knowledge of grinding principles.
• Ability to read, understand, and follow written instructions and shop drawings.
• Strong math skills, including calculations for machine settings and adjustments; proficiency in trigonometry is preferred.
• Ability to use precision measuring and testing equipment.
• Knowledge of cutting tool design and universal grinding procedures, especially with multi-axis CNC equipment.
• Computer literacy, including program entry and navigation.
• Preferred experience with CNC grinding equipment such as Walter, Studer, ANCA, Star, Schutte, Rollomatic, Hawemat, Reinecker.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Frequent standing and walking in a shop environment with potential slip hazards from machine coolant. Periodic sitting for inspections and data entry. Use of hands and arms for machine adjustments, loading/unloading, and inspection. Visual reading of instructions, setup, and inspection data. Moderate lifting of tools and wheels up to 30 pounds. Work in an air-conditioned, clean environment with some exposure to coolant and slippery floors.
