Job description

Beacon Technologies is seeking a Cloud Engineer for our client partner. This role will specialize in executing lifecycle maintenance, upgrades, configuration changes, and operational tasks across AWS cloud platform technologies.

Immediate Work Priorities:

  • Update Amazon EKS and the related platform technology stack to the most recent supported versions across all environments. This includes identifying dependencies, sequencing upgrades, completing change management, validating platform functionality, and documenting results.
  • Rebuild the AMI creation process to consistently produce hardened, patched, and validated images. The process must use approved base images and configurations, apply required security controls, run automated vulnerability and configuration checks, retain build evidence, and prevent images that fail required checks from being promoted for use.
  • Lifecycle maintenance process improvements.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Kubernetes and AWS Platform Maintenance
    • Execute Amazon EKS cluster lifecycle activities, including version upgrades and scheduled maintenance tasks.
    • Identify any technical dependencies and determine the order of operations for maintenance.
    • Perform node group updates, AMI refreshes, and approved cluster configuration changes.
    • Assist with deployment, validation, and testing of platform upgrades.
    • Implement approved platform modernization changes.
    • Troubleshoot assigned infrastructure issues and elevate complex problems to Cloud Engineers.
  • Service Mesh and Ingress
    • Execute lifecycle updates for Istio service mesh components.
    • Execute lifecycle updates for Gloo Gateway and related ingress technologies.
    • Validate service mesh, ingress, and networking functionality following upgrades.
    • Assist with certificate rotations and related maintenance activities.
    • Implement approved networking changes.
  • Platform Tooling Maintenance
    • Execute scheduled upgrades and maintenance for platform tools and services.
    • Assist with lifecycle maintenance for Argo CD, Helm, Kubernetes add-ons, observability tooling, and platform integrations.
    • Perform deployment validation and smoke testing after maintenance activities.
  • Infrastructure as Code and Automation
    • Implement infrastructure changes using established Infrastructure as Code patterns.
    • Execute approved Terraform modifications and deployments.
    • Follow established automation standards and deployment procedures.
    • Update automation and configuration artifacts as directed by Cloud Engineers.
  • Change Management and Scheduling
    • Create and maintain change records for planned lifecycle, upgrade, and configuration work.
    • Coordinate with affected stakeholders to identify recommended maintenance windows and scheduling constraints.
    • Schedule changes within stakeholder-recommended windows and the Cloud Platform team’s approved change windows.
    • Document the implementation plan, validation steps, expected impact, monitoring approach, rollback plan, and required stakeholder communications.
    • Communicate change timing and status before, during, and after execution, and elevate scheduling conflicts or material risk to Cloud Engineers.
  • Operational Support
    • Participate in assigned platform operational support activities.
    • Investigate and resolve assigned incidents and break-fix requests.
    • Assist with root cause analysis and remediation implementation.
    • Support platform monitoring and alert response.
    • Execute maintenance work during approved maintenance windows when required.
  • Documentation
    • Update technical documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures.
    • Document upgrade procedures, validation results, maintenance activities, and configuration changes.
    • Record implementation details and evidence required by the change management process.

Required Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience administering AWS services in a production environment.
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and Amazon EKS.
  • Experience using Linux-based systems.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform.
  • Experience troubleshooting cloud infrastructure issues.
  • Understanding of CI/CD deployment practices.
  • Ability to follow established technical procedures, change controls, and operational standards.
