The Cloud Engineer supports the adoption, expansion, maintenance, and optimization of cloud technologies across the organization. This position is responsible for engineering cloud-based solutions, developing automation capabilities, and providing operational support for cloud environments. The Cloud Engineer works closely with senior and lead engineers to implement scalable, secure, resilient, and cost-effective cloud solutions that support business objectives and the organization’s next-generation technology strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineer and implement cloud-based technical architectures, migration strategies, and application optimization solutions.
- Deploy and manage cloud resources using automation technologies and repeatable engineering patterns.
- Design resilient and redundant cloud solutions that support application availability and business requirements.
- Develop automation scripts that enable application and service teams to deploy software and services into cloud environments.
- Monitor cloud usage, performance, capacity, and spending trends to improve resource efficiency and optimize costs.
- Recommend cloud service improvements, designs, and optimization strategies to senior and lead engineers.
- Research and analyze proposed cloud deployments, modifications to existing services, and opportunities for further cloud adoption.
- Provide recommendations regarding cloud architecture, deployment approaches, operational support, and resource utilization.
- Perform Level 2 incident, problem, and change management activities related to cloud operations and engineering.
- Troubleshoot cloud infrastructure, automation, application deployment, and service performance issues.
- Develop and maintain documentation for operational processes, procedures, architectures, and cloud implementations.
- Remain current with emerging cloud services, automation technologies, security practices, and industry trends.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Cloud Computing, Computer and Information Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Information Technology, or a closely related discipline required.
- No education substitutions are permitted.
- Experience providing operational support for at least one major cloud service provider within an organizational environment, including Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, or Amazon Web Services.
- Experience supporting cloud infrastructure, deployments, applications, or related operational services.
Special Requirements
- Ability to speak and write English fluently and effectively.
- Ability to provide Level 2 operational support and participate in incident, problem, and change management processes.
- Terraform, Ansible, or a comparable automation technology certification is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure, architecture, deployment, operations, and resource management.
- Strong scripting and automation skills, with the ability and willingness to learn additional programming languages.
- Experience with source and version control tools and processes, including GitLab or similar platforms.
- Knowledge of infrastructure automation and configuration management technologies, including Terraform and Ansible.
- Knowledge of containerization and container orchestration technologies, including Kubernetes or Google Kubernetes Engine.
- Understanding of infrastructure concepts, including operating systems, virtualization, networking, storage, and compute resources.
- Knowledge of standard IT security practices, including identity and access management, data protection, encryption, and certificate and key management.
- Ability to design and support scalable, resilient, secure, and cost-effective cloud solutions.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to evaluate complex technical issues and recommend effective solutions.
- Ability to develop clear technical documentation, operating procedures, and implementation guidelines.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with application, service, infrastructure, security, and engineering teams.
