Job summary

MotherDuck is building a cloud-hosted version of DuckDB. We are seeking engineers who can own core backend projects that run both locally and in the cloud, improving performance and user experience.

You will collaborate closely with DuckDB Labs and multiple internal teams, mentoring peers and contributing to a high‑agency, open-source‑friendly environment. This role is preferably based in New York City but open to strong candidates remote on the East Coast.

Qualifications

• You've built and shipped complex backend systems.
• You're fluent in a backend language like C++, Rust, Java, or similar.
• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure and low-latency distributed systems.

Responsibilities

• Own major projects in dual execution and cloud integration.
• Lead cross-functional work with frontend, platform, and infrastructure teams.
• Push embedded database performance, distributed execution, and UX improvements.
• Mentor teammates and share knowledge across the organization.
• Collaborate with DuckDB Labs to align on APIs and roadmap.
• Work with support to diagnose real usage patterns and prioritize improvements.
