Job summary

Bedford Weaving, Inc. in Bedford, VA is seeking a loom operator and material handler to inspect equipment, manage loom doffing, and move beams using cloth trucks, while following safety rules.

The role requires punctuality, attention to detail, and ability to work rotating shifts including 7AM-3PM, 3PM-11PM, 11PM-7AM. It is an on-site manufacturing position with PPE provided and growth opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect lift truck and complete daily lift truck inspection form at the beginning of each shift.
  • Doff (push) the backing off the loom and start a new roll.
  • Identify proper production ticket.
  • Drive any kind of lift trucks (on-site training provided).
  • Move full and empty beams with the hubtex (cloth truck).
  • Keep the supervisor informed of all problems and issues of concern.
  • Examine each roll/pallet/rack/cage to ensure it is in good condition.
  • Transport materials to correct locations.
  • Prioritize loom doffing.
  • Place rolls in cloth trucks and/or pallets, maintain roll records.
  • Coordinate with Shipping when required.
  • Maintain housekeeping and proper waste disposal.
  • Maintain equipment in good working condition.
  • Report incidents immediately.
  • Work safely with adherence to safety procedures.

Nestled in the historic town of Bedford, Virginia, Bedford Weaving has been a staple in the community for many years. After starting as a silk weaving mill in the 1930s, Belding-Heminway, one of the oldest textile companies founded in this country, purchased the company. Belding-Heminway continued to operate until Mr. Garbarini purchased the business in 1982 and the company has continued to see success and growth through subsequent generations of the Garbarini family.

After starting as a silk weaving mill in the 1930s, Belding-Heminway, one of the oldest textile companies founded in this country, purchased the company. Belding-Heminway continued to operate until Mr. Garbarini purchased the business in 1982 and the company has continued to see success and growth through subsequent generations of the Garbarini family. Belding-Hemingway played an important role in the manufacturing of thread for parachutes during WWII1. The Garbarini family has kept this rich tradition alive today by continuing to supply to companies that produce American made products.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Inspect lift truck and complete daily lift truck inspection form at the beginning of each shift
  • Ability to doff (push) the backing off the loom and start a new roll
  • Must be able to identify proper production ticket
  • Must be able to drive any kind of lift trucks (on-site training provided)
  • Move full and empty beams with the hubtex (cloth truck)
  • Keep the supervisor informed of all problems and issues of concern
  • Examine each roll/pallet/rack/cage carefully to ensure it is in good condition
  • Responsible for setting/transporting the material in the correct locations
  • Responsible for prioritizing loom doffing
  • Placing the rolls in the cloth trucks and/or pallets, and maintaining the roll records
  • Must be able to work with Shipping when required
  • Responsible for housekeeping such as emptying trash cans, putting paper waste in trash cans, emptying loom waste cans in correct bins, etc.
  • Maintain good working condition of the equipment
  • Report any incidents immediately
  • Work safely with complete adherence to all safety procedures

Physical Requirements
  • Moving, bending, and pushing
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance
  • Adhere to safety requirements including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time
Working Conditions
  • Manufacturing setting
  • Must be able to rotate shifts monthly
  • Shifts are as follows: 7AM – 3PM, 3PM – 11PM, 11PM – 7AM
  • Moderate to high noise levels at times (PPE and testing provided)
  • May require the use of sharp tools to cut materials
