Qualifications

  • Current RN licensure in Florida.
  • At least 2 years of nursing experience including initiation of IV therapy.
  • VA-BC certification preferred.
  • Ultrasound experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Independently insert and manage midline catheters, PICCs, and difficult peripheral IVs using advanced clinical skills.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments to determine vascular access needs.
  • Provide ongoing surveillance of vascular access devices for complications.
  • Document assessments, insertions, surveillance, and interventions accurately in medical records.
  • Serve as a clinical expert and resource for vascular access across the organization.
  • Participate in infusion-related committees and contribute to policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement staff and patient education on infusion therapy and vascular access.
  • Analyze surveillance data to identify trends and quality improvement opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Nurse Manager on unit operations and staff orientation.
  • Deliver nursing care that ensures patient safety and aligns with Tampa General Hospital mission.

Description

Under general supervision and in accordance with established nursing standards, policies, procedures, and professional guidelines, the Clinician – Vascular Access Team provides expert nursing care focused on vascular access management. This role exercises independent judgment and advanced clinical skills to autonomously insert and manage midlines, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs), and difficult peripheral IVs. The clinician serves as a clinical expert and resource for vascular access across the organization, collaborates with leadership on unit operations, contributes to education and infusion‑related committees, and ensures high‑quality, safe, and patient‑centered care consistent with the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital.

Essential Functions
  • Independently insert and manage midline catheters, PICCs, and difficult peripheral IVs using advanced clinical skills and professional judgment.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments to determine appropriate vascular access devices and infusion therapy plans.
  • Provide ongoing surveillance of vascular access devices to identify complications such as infection, phlebitis, thrombosis, or malfunction.
  • Document all assessments, insertions, surveillance activities, and interventions accurately in the medical record and required systems.
  • Act as a clinical expert and resource for hospital staff regarding vascular access device selection, care, and troubleshooting.
  • Participate in infusion‑related committees and contribute to the development, review, and revision of policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Develop and implement staff and patient education programs related to infusion therapy and vascular access management.
  • Analyze vascular access and central line surveillance data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for quality improvement.
  • Collaborate with the Nurse Manager in unit operations, orientation, and education of new staff, students, and preceptor program participants.
  • Deliver nursing care that ensures patient safety, protects patient rights, and reflects the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree Nursing
  • Registered Nurse licensure through the Florida Department of Health.
  • Two (2) years of nursing experience, including initiation of I-V therapy.
  • VA-BC certification preferred.
  • Ultrasound experience preferred.
Skills & Abilities
  • In‑depth knowledge of all vascular access devices, including selection, insertion, maintenance, surveillance, and removal.
  • Ability to independently assess patients, evaluate IV access needs, determine appropriateness of device selection, and initiate timely interventions.
  • Proficiency in comprehensive nursing assessment, development of individualized plans of care, and accurate clinical documentation.
  • Ability to develop and deliver staff and patient education related to infusion therapy, vascular access care, and complication prevention.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, committees, patients, and families.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention practices, central line surveillance, regulatory requirements, and hospital policies related to vascular access.
