Overview

In conjunction with the Principal Investigator this Clinician and Clinical Research Director (CCRD) is responsible for the strategic, operational, clinical, and regulatory duties associated with the leadership of the InSTRIDE Program which encompasses a comprehensive clinical research unit, including two mobile health units and a mobile pharmacy clinic. This role encompasses providing direct clinical care and medical oversight, management of all clinical research activities, and overall administrative responsibility for the InSTRIDE program and staff.

The CCRD will provide direct clinical care, both in-person and telehealth to patients on a mobile pharmacy clinic, mobile health units and within a brick-and-mortar clinical research program as well as medical oversight to the InSTRIDE program. The person will oversee an interdisciplinary research and clinical program and innovative models of healthcare delivery supporting federally funded research, including NIH-supported initiatives. The role provides direct leadership for clinical and operational teams, including APRNs, research nurses, community health workers, patient navigators, project managers, research assistants, data managers and clinical research personnel.

This position is responsible for oversight and expansion of mobile clinical research and mobile pharmacy operations, decentralized clinical trial infrastructure, telehealth initiatives, and community-based research programs designed to improve healthcare access, research participation, and health equity across diverse populations and geographic regions.

The CCRD serves in a senior leadership capacity across clinical, administrative, research, and policy domains and is responsible for strategic growth planning, program expansion into additional clinical and community settings, workforce development, and implementation of scalable and sustainable clinical research operations in conjunction with the Principal Investigator. The position will collaborate with Yale School of Nursing, Yale School of Medicine, Yale School of Public Health, other academic institutions outside Yale, community organizations, healthcare systems, and governmental agencies to develop innovative care delivery and research models.

CCRD Principal Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

The CCRD will serve as a member of the research team for multiple NIH grant-funded projects and will provide medical oversight and direct clinical care including in-person and telehealth, related to clinical and clinical research activities in both inpatient and outpatient settings including mobile health units. These duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Conduct of clinical assessments (e.g. physical examinations) and ordering of diagnostic testing and treatment for patients presenting to the mobile and brick-and-mortar InSTRIDE locations.
• Prescribing and administering medications including injections and infusions.
• Obtain biological specimens (e.g. blood) as needed.
• Assessment and management of adverse events.
• Assessment of opioid withdrawal and initiation of all forms of medications for opioid use disorder as need for antiretroviral therapy for HIV infection or PrEP for those at risk for acquiring HIV.
• Serves as the Medical Director for all clinical and research activities acting as a resource for staff and assuring patient safety.

Management of Clinical Research

In conjunction with the Principal Investigator, the CCRD will provide oversight of all programmatic activities and staff including, but not limited to, the following:

• Provide senior clinical, operational, administrative, and strategic leadership for multidisciplinary clinical research and healthcare delivery programs supporting Yale research initiatives in conjunction with the Principal Investigator.
• Oversee interdisciplinary teams including APRNs, research nurses, project managers, research assistants, patient navigators, community health workers, clinical coordinators, and research personnel to ensure high-quality, patient-centered, compliant, and efficient clinical research operations.
• Lead development, implementation, and expansion of clinical research programs, mobile health services, mobile pharmacy operations, telehealth initiatives, and decentralized clinical trial models across multiple care settings and community-based locations.
• Develop and implement long-term strategic plans for program growth, operational sustainability, workforce development, clinical infrastructure expansion, and research integration across institutional and community environments.
• Support the development and submission of grant applications and funding proposals, including NIH, NIDA, foundation, and other sponsored research opportunities supporting clinical research infrastructure, telehealth, behavioral health, addiction medicine, and community-based care initiatives.
• Lead and support the dissemination of clinical, operational, and translational research findings through presentations, publications, conferences, strategic collaborations, and institutional reporting at site, regional, state, and national levels.
• Support the development and implementation of research initiatives focused on healthcare disparities, community engagement, addiction medicine, infectious diseases, public health, and innovative approaches to clinical care delivery.
• Collaborate with Yale partners on the development and implementation of telehealth and innovative healthcare delivery programs designed to improve access to care and support clinical research participation.

Administrative Responsibilities

In conjunction with the Principal Investigator, the CCRD will provide oversight of all programmatic activities and staff including, but not limited to, the following:

• Human resource management including direct oversight of program leadership (e.g., Project Coordinators, Data Management Team).
• Fiscal oversight and management.
• Coordination and facilitation of interdisciplinary meetings, operational workgroups, institutional committees, external collaborations, and strategic planning initiatives related to clinical research and healthcare program operations.
• Serve as a liaison among institutional leadership, clinical departments, community partners, governmental agencies, and external collaborators to ensure effective communication, operational alignment, and successful execution of programmatic initiatives.
• Development of operational workflows, communication strategies, quality improvement initiatives, and performance metrics to enhance efficiency, patient engagement, regulatory compliance, and clinical research outcomes.
• Provide leadership in institutional, state, and national policy initiatives related to clinical research operations, healthcare access, addiction medicine, behavioral health, telehealth, healthcare equity, and public health.
• Collaboration with Yale leadership, governmental agencies, community organizations, and external stakeholders to support advocacy initiatives, regulatory strategy development, and implementation of evidence-based healthcare and research policies in conjunction with the Principal Investigator.
• Oversee compliance with DEA, FDA, NIH, NIDA, HIPAA, ICH-GCP, and federal and state research regulations while ensuring operational readiness, audit preparedness, participant safety, and regulatory excellence.
• Expand clinical and research programs into additional geographic regions, healthcare systems, and community settings to support institutional growth, community engagement, and broader access to clinical research and healthcare services in conjunction with the Principal Investigator.

Required Skills and Abilities

• Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
• Demonstrated progressively responsible experience in a leadership role.
• Proven experience managing populations with substance use disorders and living with or at risk for HIV.
• Proven experience leading interdisciplinary teams, including APRNs.
• Proven experience supporting grant-funded research initiatives.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

• CT APRN license (or eligible) with ANCC or AANP certification.
• Prescriptive privileges (or eligible) in the State of Connecticut, a federal DEA license, and CT DCP license for prescription of controlled substances.
• Qualifies for hospital and faculty appointments.
