Temple University’s LKSOM/Central Animal Facilities division seeks a Clinical Veterinarian (Sr. or Associate) to provide professional veterinary care and enforce humane standards for research animal colonies.

The role covers hands-on care for mice to large animals and may include acting as University Attending Veterinarian as needed. Responsibilities include clinical exams, diagnostic testing, anesthesia, and supervision of staff, while ensuring regulatory compliance and contributing to IACUC

Qualifications

• VMD/DVM from an accredited US School of Veterinary Medicine.
• PA veterinary license or eligibility within 3 months.
• 5+ years in laboratory animal medicine for Senior; 0–4 years for Associate.
• Ability to obtain a practitioner’s DEA license within 6–9 months.
• Experience in large animal anesthesia and surgical support.

Responsibilities

• Conduct veterinary exams, diagnostic tests, and maintain health records for all research animals.
• Provide diagnostic and therapeutic care, including medication prescription, monitoring, and euthanasia procedures.
• Supervise technical staff during clinical work, oversee regulatory compliance, and train animal users.
• Assist investigators with research protocols, perform quality assurance for campus animal facilities, and serve on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and other assigned committees.
• Maintain safety, humane and sanitary handling of animals and materials exposed to hazardous agents.
• Follow standard operating procedures and internal policies, upholding compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Temple University’s LKSOM/Central Animal Facilities division is searching for a Clinical Veterinarian (Sr. or Associate).

Position Summary

The Clinical Veterinarian (Sr. or Associate) supports the Animal Care and Use program at Temple University by providing professional veterinary care, enforcing humane care for research animal colonies, and may serve as acting University Attending Veterinarian as needed. The role encompasses hands‑on clinical care for all animals under the University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR) department, including mice, rats, dogs, cats, sheep, pigs, aquatics, reptiles, and more.

• Provide diagnostic and therapeutic care, including medication prescription, monitoring, and euthanasia procedures.

Required Education and Experience

• VMD/DVM from an accredited US School of Veterinary Medicine.
• Veterinary licensure in PA (or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire).
• Grade T28 (Associate): 0–4 years’ experience in laboratory animal medicine in academic, non‑profit, government, or industry settings.
• Grade T29 (Senior): 5+ years’ experience in laboratory animal medicine in academic, non‑profit, government, or industry settings.
• Ability to obtain a practitioner’s DEA license within 6–9 months of employment.
• Demonstrated experience in providing large animal anesthesia and surgical support services.

Required Skills and Abilities

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with department personnel, investigators, research staff, and administrators.
• Communicate verbally and in writing, including proficiency in English, mathematics, word processing, spreadsheets, and e‑mail.
• Show a customer‑focused attitude while fostering a team‑oriented culture.
• Interact with diverse constituents, including faculty, staff, and students.
• Use and troubleshoot veterinary equipment, and employ software such as Zoom, MS Teams, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Pursue continuous improvement, including additional training and continuing education.

Preferred

• Completion of residency in laboratory animal medicine.
• Three or more years of post‑doctoral training experience.
• American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification or eligibility.
• Experience with rodent surgical models, rodent technical procedures, USDA species technical procedures and models, rodent breeding colonies, genetically altered animals, aquatics procedures, and rodent medicine.
