The role includes emergency coverage, collaboration with researchers and animal care teams, and involvement with protocols and safety programs.
The Clinical Veterinarian is responsible for leading the clinical evaluation and comprehensive veterinary care program for research-bred non-human primates. Serving as the primary provider of preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic medical services, this role directs daily operations of the veterinary hospitals and supervises veterinary technicians. The veterinarian conducts routine health assessments, monitors medical and behavioral conditions, administers treatments, and carries out research-related procedures in accordance with approved protocols. Responsibilities also include performing gross necropsies to support disease surveillance and overall colony health management. In addition, the Clinical Veterinarian may review and assess animal-use research protocols, contribute to the design and development of new programs and facilities, and provide guidance and oversight to animal care and facilities teams while fulfilling other related duties as needed.

To be successful in this role, the Clinical Veterinarian must demonstrate strong expertise in veterinary medicine, including anatomy, physiology, and pathology. The position requires proficiency in delivering clinical care and interpreting diagnostic information such as medical histories, physical exams, specimen collection, in-field testing, laboratory data, and radiographic findings. The veterinarian must be skilled in therapeutic interventions, including supportive care, pharmacologic treatment, surgical procedures, and pain management. Additionally, the role demands resilience under pressure, adaptability in dynamic environments, and the professional judgment to recognize personal limitations and seek guidance when appropriate.
DVM/VMD from a veterinary medical college accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Current state licensure in at least one state and able to obtain licensure in South Carolina within 60 days of hire. The Clinical Veterinarian must be eligible to obtain DEA licensure. Three-five years of laboratory primate experience is preferred. Post-doctoral or veterinary research experience is preferred. ACLAM eligibility or diplomate status is highly preferred. The Clinical Veterinarian must have good reading, writing, mathematics and computer skills (Access, MS Word, Excel, email and internet).
South Carolina Drivers’ License or equivalent. Current DVM licensure in at least one state and ability to obtain South Carolina License within 60 days.
