Job description

Clinical Trials Research Manager

The Department of Psychiatry is seeking a part-time temporary Clinical Trials Research Manager to administer, plan, promote, and manage the clinical trial program for patients with Alzheimer's disease and similar conditions.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
  • Direct the clinical trial program that conducts experimental medication studies that include brain imaging, laboratory monitoring, physical and cognitive assessments.
  • Communicate with the national coordinating centers for the organization and implementation of the clinical trial protocols.
  • Manage the monitoring visits with the national clinical trial coordinating center.
  • Provide nursing assessment examinations of vital signs, clinical symptoms, medical history and initial screening of medical suitability for clinical research.
  • Implement the participant scheduling system to work with the research magnetic resonance imaging center and the positron emission tomography center to facilitate brain imaging data collection on elderly research participants.
  • Manage research clinical visits for physical examination, lumbar puncture and intravenous medication administration.
  • Meet with the UI Clinical Research Unit staff to obtain protocol approval and implementation, work with the CRU staff during all participant visits.
  • Collaborate with the UI research pharmacy for medication dispensing.
  • Interface with the community in participant recruitment by presenting at community lectures and community activities focused on health care.
  • Interact with participants during the process of recruitment, manage the participant screening phone calls and distribute study information to interested participants.
  • Manage the day-to-day questions and concerns from research participants including questions about their concomitant medications, potential adverse medication effects and any other medical concerns.
  • Work with the central research coordinating site data entry system and regulatory reporting system to maintain data integrity and privacy.
  • Communicate with the study physicians and other collaborators in the implementation of the research study visits.
  • Maintain documentation of research study documents, regulatory documents as well as participant communications.
Required Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required. A Master's degree in Nursing or an equivalent combination of nursing and clinical care experience is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years' administrative, supervisory and program experience is required in the area of clinical trial coordination. Must include experience with intravenous administration of experimental medications and coordinating medication dispensing from the UI Interventional Pharmacy.
  • Must have five or more years of experience collecting biosamples from compromised patients (e.g., Alzheimer's disease). Biosample collection includes conducting venipuncture for blood samples, urine collection, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required including familiarity with documentation and research scheduling in the EPIC medical record system.
  • Must be proficient in computer software applications.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience working in an academic health center.

Note: This is a temporary, part-time position and paid hourly.
