Addictions and Behavioral Health Therapist Clinical Supervisor

Days 8-5 /one evening until 7:30/ no weekends/ no holidays

The Addictions and Behavioral Health Therapist Clinical Supervisor applies evidence-based therapies, principles, techniques, and strategies to facilitate the progress of patients into recovery from substance use and mental health disorders. This includes identifying and working towards mutually determined treatment goals and providing individual and group counseling and therapy to patients with diverse backgrounds and their affected family members. This position is the primary case manager for patients receiving Addiction Medicine services. When applicable, the outpatient and inpatient teams coordinate to ensure transfer of care from inpatient medical management to outpatient rehabilitation is seamless. The Addictions and Mental Health Therapist Clinical Supervisor provides appropriate clinical supervision to staff during regularly scheduled supervision schedules – depending on clinical supervisor licensure this may include Mental Health and/or Substance Abuse supervision. This position may also serve as on-site designee in charge in absence of clinic manager.

As part of our commitment to continuous professional development and the therapeutic modalities utilized within our program, new hires will receive $2,500 in education funds during the first year, which can be utilized towards completing training in Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities
Screening, Treatment Planning, Intervention, and Education
  • Screens, performs intake assessments and collects diagnostic information in order to determine an immediate treatment plan and assist patients in successfully achieving healthcare goals, primarily related to substance abuse and mental health.
  • Triages individuals with acute behavioral health conditions including suicidality, psychosis, mania, and substance use problems to appropriate levels of treatment.
  • Provides American Society of Addiction Medicine Levels 1 and 2 treatments.
  • Refer to higher levels of care based on clinical judgement.
  • Completes psycho-social assessments and interventions.
  • Works collaboratively with patient, family, and treatment team to create a treatment plan that will provide the best possible recovery and stabilization.
  • Completes transfer of care, discharge summaries, and discharge instructions.
  • Utilizes best practice approaches, including Zero Suicide techniques for suicide prevention such as Safety Planning and the appropriate community referrals, trauma informed care, and harm reduction.
Documentation
  • Maintains appropriate documentation of all clinical services provided to patients based on DHS 75 standards.
  • Reviews and modifies treatment plan per DHS 75 and UPH – Meriter standards.
Care Coordination
  • Participates in formal patient care coordination meetings.
  • Case manages patients receiving services through Newstart.
  • Refers patients to and coordinates with community resources and providers, including the primary care physician.
  • Assist Newstart physician in case management.
  • Assist family members with referrals to services not provided by Newstart.
  • Communicates with legal system for reasons including drug court, deferred prosecution, driver safety plans, probation, and child protective services.
Collaboration with The NewStart Team
  • Participates or leads on committees as assigned within NewStart service.
  • Participates or leads staff meetings.
  • Provides clinical supervision sessions and in-service trainings.
  • Assists NewStart management in promoting awareness of chemical dependency as a disease in the community.
  • Performs telephone triage and crisis intervention direction.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master of Science or Master of Arts degree from accredited school of Social Work (clinical track), Counseling, or Marriage and Family Counseling.
  • 5-years clinical experience with individuals with substance use disorders and mental illness.
  • Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
  • Skilled in collecting diagnostic information.
  • Able to assess and recommend levels of care based on American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria.
  • Skilled in Case Management.
  • Experience with individual, family, and group therapies.
  • Familiarity with addiction recovery process and symptoms of relapse.
  • Able to utilize evidence-based psychotherapy interventions, such as motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma-informed care, harm reduction, mindfulness, dialectical behavioral therapy, and 12-step facilitation.
  • Ability to handle situations and patients who may experience labile moods.
  • Ability to practice cultural humility and work with a diverse population of clients and staff, including using an interpreter.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with adolescents and adults.
  • Experience and skill in working as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate other problem solving, conflict resolution and effective communication skills.
  • Crisis intervention management skills.
  • Basic, nontechnical knowledge of psychotropic and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) medications.
  • Able to work independently as well as within a team.
Preferred
  • Minimum of 360 hours of specialized substance use disorder education as outlined in WI Statutes SPS 161.
  • Clinical Supervisor Substance Abuse Certification, Substance Abuse Certification (SAC or CSAC).
  • Familiarity with Community based support groups.
  • WI Department of Health Services Chapter 75, “Community Substance Abuse Service Standards.”
  • Electronic Health Records.
