Texas Oncology is looking for a Clinical Social Worker to join our team! This full‑time position will support the McAllen location. Schedule is Monday‑Friday 8am‑5pm, no weekends, call, or major holidays.

What does the Clinical Social Worker do?

Participates in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders for patients requiring emotional and psycho‑social assistance. Provides knowledge of agencies and organizations offering emotional, physical, social, and financial services to patients and families. Supports and adheres to the Texas Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

Responsibilities

• Provides therapeutic counseling to patients, family members, and caregivers as needed; conducts assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral issues; documents session notes and billing requirements in a timely manner if billing services.
• Demonstrates a strong knowledge of the psychosocial impact of cancer on the patient and family system throughout the continuum of care, including diagnosis, advanced cancer, end‑of‑life care, and survivorship, and the practical implications such as financial distress, changes in relationships, custody planning, advance care planning, and spiritual distress.
• Provides emotional support and crisis assessment/interventions to patients and families, and offers non‑pharmacologic support for pain, sleep issues, and other physical concerns.
• Actively participates in the medical interdisciplinary team and maintains ongoing communication to facilitate understanding and support of identified patient and family needs.
• Contributes to Value Based Care initiatives by participating in distress and depression screening follow‑up, advance care planning, and end‑of‑life conversations; documents notes and billing requirements if billing for advance care planning visits.
• Assists patients and families with transition to survivorship and associated issues.
• Administers psychosocial needs assessments, provides follow‑up, and considers social support, community resources, and coping mechanisms.
• Develops, maintains, and facilitates support groups to enhance quality of care for patients and families.
• Coordinates support groups with local agencies and health care providers to prevent duplication of services and better address patient needs.
• Educates clinic staff on skills and knowledge specific to the role of a clinical social worker; serves as a resource to manage psychological needs and address staff stress and secondary trauma.
• Provides information about appropriate community resources to patients and families to access a wide variety of services.
• Maintains working relationships with community agencies, health care organizations, and other providers to promote comprehensive support.
• Acts as a patient/family advocate, negotiating the health care system and facilitating communication between patient/family and medical team.
• Documents all interventions accurately, appropriately, and timely in the EMR; bills services if applicable.
• Provides professional presentations to groups and organizations on psycho‑social aspects of the cancer experience.
• Participates in quality improvement activities and may oversee staff coordinating Social Services.
• Supervises MSW Student Interns, reviews candidates, mentors, and provides documentation training.
• Provides clinical supervision to MSWs working toward licensure when appropriate and deemed necessary.
• Demonstrates knowledge of age‑specific differences in the patient population, including late adolescence, adulthood, middle age, and the elderly.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Social Work from a CSWE‑accredited program.
• Minimum three to five years of experience as a clinical social worker in a health care setting, with oncology, palliative care, and/or hospice experience preferred.
• Valid and current Texas state master’s clinical‑level license (e.g., LCSW).
