Job description

Position Summary:

VCU Department of Pediatrics is dedicated to caring for children and families, discovering new treatments, improving outcomes, and researching innovative ideas. The Pediatric Research Office supports VCU clinical researchers in advancing investigative medicine.

This entry-level position supports the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and other divisions as a member of the Pediatric Research Office.

The Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) 1 assists upper-level CRCs and Principal Investigators (PI) in activities related to the activation, execution, and management of clinical, patient-oriented research studies or protocols. Responsibilities include determining participant eligibility, recruiting and educating patients/participants, and collecting, compiling, and documenting clinical research data.

This role requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Under general supervision, the CRC 1 resolves most standard issues independently and refers complex issues to management or the PI as appropriate.

The position reports in person at VCU Health downtown Richmond, VA, with potential for remote/hybrid work following onboarding, 3-6 months of training, and manager approval.

Core Responsibilities:
Study Conduct (60%):
  • Maintain understanding of clinical research duties from study initiation to close-out, ensuring protocol compliance.
  • Assist in subject recruitment, including attending clinics/rounds, screening patient charts, determining eligibility, and developing recruitment plans.
  • Assist with consent and assent processes, serving as a resource for patients and families.
  • Coordinate patient study visits with the research team and clinicians, including biospecimen collection and data recording.
  • Assist with IRB submissions and ensure timely and complete documentation.
  • Maintain effective communication with sponsors, participants, the Pediatric Research Office, care teams, and investigators.
  • Prioritize patient safety and follow institutional and regulatory policies.
  • Complete required training modules for clinical systems access and comply with policies, including vaccination and annual training requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Data Management & Documentation (25%):
  • Enter data accurately into case report forms, databases, and systems, building logs as needed.
  • Maintain study files according to GCP guidelines, ensuring audit readiness.
  • Participate in monitoring and auditing activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
General / Administrative (15%):
  • Support the Pediatric Research Office through event participation, training, and study tasks.
  • Share information and support cross-study collaboration, including administrative tasks as needed.
