Coming soon! Boston Children's Hospital is opening a new state-of-the-art onsite Retail pharmacy.

Responsibilities of the Retail Pharmacist will include:
  1. Reviewing, filling, and dispensing physician medication orders/prescriptions. Interpreting and evaluating medication orders to ensure appropriate drug and dosage for the patient, and identifying possible adverse reactions, contacting physicians as needed.
  2. Checking orders/prescriptions filled by support personnel, verifying correct preparation and labeling of products.
  3. Counseling patients on proper use, storage, and side effects of prescribed medications.
  4. Supervising, prioritizing, and assigning work of technical support personnel within the area of responsibility. Monitoring work volume and delegating work to meet schedules and patient care needs.
  5. Monitoring and evaluating work performance, providing guidance, feedback, and instruction to ensure proper preparation, labeling, recording, and distribution of medications according to procedures and regulations.
  6. Educating and advising physicians, nursing, and pharmacy staff on drug interactions, contraindications, allergies, side effects, and administration instructions. Conducting in-service education and maintaining drug information materials.
  7. Maintaining logs and records, such as controlled substances distribution, quality assurance reviews, and work volume statistics, in accordance with standards. Performing audits and documenting results.
  8. Monitoring and updating internal systems, procedures, and guidelines for the unit/service. Recommending improvements for operational efficiency and patient care quality.
  9. Orienting new staff pharmacists, overseeing training of technical personnel, and identifying training needs.
  10. Participating in training and continuing education, serving as a preceptor for interns, and monitoring their performance.
  11. Maintaining pharmacy equipment, supplies, and facilities.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in pharmacy plus up to one year of postgraduate coursework and/or internship; two to three years of general pharmacy experience, or one year of pediatric-specific experience. A Doctorate in Pharmacy is preferred.
  • Massachusetts pharmacist or intern license; pharmacist license must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
  • Previous hospital-based retail pharmacy experience is highly preferred.
  • Analytical skills to gather and analyze information, apply principles, and solve problems or design systems.
  • Effective communication skills for dealing with conflicting views and mediating solutions; well-developed writing skills.

Schedule: Days/evenings, rotating weekends.
