Job summary

Indiana University Health Fishers is seeking a Master’s-prepared Clinical Nurse Specialist to elevate patient care within Medical Surgical units and provide cross-coverage across periop and maternal/child services. The CNS will influence practice, lead education, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in a Magnet-designated system.

You will mentor staff, drive evidence-based improvements, and support professional development while contributing to system-wide nursing excellence and outcomes.

Qualifications

• BSN required for clinical nurse specialist practice.
• Master of Science in Nursing with CNS credential required.
• Active RN license in Indiana or NLC and CNS regulatory eligibility.
• 3–5 years of advanced nursing experience in acute care settings.
• BLS certification required; other ALS as unit policy may apply.
• Commitment to evidence-based practice and patient safety.

Position Overview:
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a Masters-prepared Advanced Practice Registered Nurse dedicated to enhancing patient care outcomes within the Medical Surgical Units. Serving in five key roles—Expert Clinician, Educator, Leader, Researcher, and Consultant—the CNS actively influences patient care practices, nursing excellence, and system improvements across their specialty areas.

Key Responsibilities:

• Serve as a clinical expert in medical-surgical nursing practices, providing advanced consultation and support to staff and leadership.
• Develop and facilitate educational programs to enhance staff competency and promote evidence-based practice.
• Lead quality improvement initiatives and participate in research activities aimed at improving patient outcomes.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to optimize systems and processes that support safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
• Provide mentorship and support to nursing staff, fostering professional development and clinical excellence.

Qualifications:

• Bachelors Degree of Nursing (BSN) required.
• Master in nursing as Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) required.
• Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license and meets regulatory requirements to practice as a CNS.
• Requires 3-5 years of advanced clinical skills typically gained through nursing experience.
• Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
• Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
