Job summary

Indiana University Health is seeking a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to join our Fishers team supporting inpatient Medical-Surgical, Critical Care, and Emergency Department units. The CNS will also cross-cover perioperative and Maternal/Newborn services as needed between North and Fishers.

The CNS is a Masters-prepared APRN who leads education, quality improvement, and system improvements, serving as a clinical expert, educator, leader, researcher, and consultant to promote evidence-based

Qualifications

• BSN required.
• MSN with CNS specialization required.
• Active Indiana RN license or NLC and eligible to practice as CNS.
• 3–5 years of advanced clinical nursing experience.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Additional ACLS or unit-specific life support may be required.

Responsibilities

• Act as a clinical expert in medical-surgical nursing and provide advanced consultation.
• Develop and deliver educational programs to enhance staff competency.
• Lead quality improvement initiatives and participate in research.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient care systems.
• Mentor nursing staff and promote clinical excellence.

Position Overview:

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a Masters-prepared Advanced Practice Registered Nurse dedicated to enhancing patient care outcomes within the Medical Surgical Units. Serving in five key roles—Expert Clinician, Educator, Leader, Researcher, and Consultant—the CNS actively influences patient care practices, nursing excellence, and system improvements across their specialty areas.

Key Responsibilities:

• Serve as a clinical expert in medical-surgical nursing practices, providing advanced consultation and support to staff and leadership.
• Develop and facilitate educational programs to enhance staff competency and promote evidence-based practice.
• Lead quality improvement initiatives and participate in research activities aimed at improving patient outcomes.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to optimize systems and processes that support safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
• Provide mentorship and support to nursing staff, fostering professional development and clinical excellence.

Qualifications:

• Bachelors Degree of Nursing (BSN) required.
• Master in nursing as Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) required.
• Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license and meets regulatory requirements to practice as a CNS.
• Requires 3-5 years of advanced clinical skills typically gained through nursing experience.
• Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
• Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
