Job Description for Clinical Nurse I, II, III

The Clinical Nurse I job integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family. This role assists the healthcare team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. It provides direction, education, and begins to develop leadership skills at the unit level. The job involves delivering and accurately documenting direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and an interdisciplinary plan of care. It also includes safely administering prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and interactions.

The Clinical Nurse II role demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and begins to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population. It involves recognizing changes in patient conditions and intervening appropriately, mobilizing resources to meet patient and family needs, providing direction and education, and assuming leadership responsibilities at the unit level. Responsibilities include delivering and documenting age-specific care and safely administering medications.

The Clinical Nurse III role demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies this to a specific patient population. It involves anticipating changes in patient situations, intervening appropriately, serving as a role model, and providing leadership and education. Responsibilities include delivering and documenting age-specific care and safely administering medications.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state for Clin I, II, III
  • AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent for continued employment
Experience:
  • Clin I: Not applicable
  • Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
  • Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience
Preferred Experience:
  • Clin I: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting or relevant area
  • Clin II & III: Academic healthcare experience; experience with similar patient populations in acute care
Education/Training:
  • Diploma or Associate Degree from a recognized nursing program for all levels
  • All RNs without a Bachelor's degree must enroll in an RN to BSN program within two years and complete it within five years unless grandfathered
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or higher; Certification in a specialty area for Clin III
Additional Requirements:
  • Follows physician/licensed provider orders
  • Practices within Virginia nursing regulations
  • Guided by ANA Code of Ethics and national standards
  • Organizes work and delegates as appropriate
  • Work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, with schedules established by management
  • Physical activity includes lifting, standing, bending, walking, climbing, reaching; exposure to hazardous substances; mental and sensory skills; ability to handle a fast-paced environment
