Hourly Pay Range

$38.16 - $59.15 – The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.

Position Highlights
  • Position: This full‑time position is a dual role of 0.4 FTE in the Clinical Nurse Educator – Department based role supporting ongoing staff development and 0.4 FTE in the RN role supporting unit staffing in 4L Med‑Surg/Overflow. (Salary Range for RN role is $36.00–$55.80).

A Brief Overview

A Nurse Educator is a nurse with previous clinical experience in the care of med‑surg patients, who may or may not have had previous educational experience, focusing on staff development and nursing education. Reporting to the Director of Nursing Professional Development and collaborating with the unit manager, the Clinical Nurse Educator – Department Based elevates professional nursing practice within the med‑surg patient population by developing, coaching, and mentoring nursing staff. They also maintain clinical proficiency by providing direct patient care, precepting, and delivering bedside “just‑in‑time” education to nursing staff.

What You Will Do
  • Provide direct patient care.
  • Act as a clinical resource to staff; maintain visibility in the clinical environment for just‑in‑time learning facilitation or assisting in providing direct patient care.
  • Maintain flexibility in scheduling to accommodate educational activities at various times of the day and days of the week.
  • Serve as a clinical mentor and role model for new and existing staff.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Nurse Manager to assess education and performance needs of staff and serve as a resource for Clinical Managers/Clinical Coordinators in defining education and performance needs.
  • Support the role transition, role integration, skill acquisition and mastery as nursing staff advance from novice to expert.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of unit/service line/area‑based competency requirements for nurses and patient care technicians.
  • Facilitate the onboarding of employees to ensure integration to the role on both unit and system‑wide levels, focusing on retention and growth for licensed and unlicensed team members.
  • Manage education and training processes/activities to foster learning using strategies that engage learners in critical inquiry, critical thinking, problem solving, and foster the development of competence in learners.
  • Precept registered nurses new to the department.
  • Mentor and evaluate preceptors to enhance learning experiences for all new hires.
  • Evaluate orientation and onboarding experiences to ensure newly hired team members are prepared to practice safely and independently.
  • Organize and act as a resource for on‑unit in‑services for new products, equipment, policies/procedures/practice.
  • Work with Clinical Nurse Manager to partner with staff in leading unit council development and participation in shared decision‑making councils.
  • Partner with Clinical Nurse Manager to drive unit safety, quality outcomes and patient experience.
  • Promote a positive and professional climate and provide resources for learning that facilitate the life‑long learning process.
  • Support and promote specialty certification preparation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of effective communication principles and promote communication among disciplines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What You Will Need
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in nursing required or Diploma Degree in Nursing and Bachelor’s Degree in Health‑Related Field. Master’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Certification: Current Professional Nursing Licensure in the State of Illinois. Current nursing specialty certification; if no specialty nursing certification, certification required within one year of assuming role. Current Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and/or Neonatal Resuscitation as applicable to role.
  • Experience: At least five years of clinical experience in a medical center, hospital environment or academic setting.
  • Unique or Preferred Skills: Adult learner knowledge and expertise. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Flexibility in work schedule. Ability to effectively interact with colleagues and all members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to engage in dialogue with diverse healthcare audiences. Commitment to teamwork; ability to work with others to set and accomplish goals through collaboration and coordination. Possesses presentation skills necessary to provide education to audiences. Commitment to continued personal professional development as evidenced by attendance at seminars, conferences, maintaining specialty certification, etc. Proficiency in a variety of computer programs (Microsoft Office – Word, Power Point, Excel) and virtual meeting platforms. Ability to conduct literature searches to investigate best practices, evidence‑based practices, and/or research studies. Specific Applications: Workday. Proficiency with Electronic Medical Record.
